CURRY-COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,733, dated August 19, 1890.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. STAPLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Del troit, in the county of Vtayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in curry-combs; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts whereby a metallic comb may be constructed withvsuitable lightness and strength of the and shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved comb, looking at the un der side. thereof. A is the back of the comb, formed of sheet metal cut of suitable shape and provided with the strap or handle A', secured thereto in any suitable manner.

The blades are formed of sheet metal with smoothvedges, preferably to the number of four, the two central ones, marked B B, are straight and parallel to each other and the other two, B B, being the outside ones, are curved correspondingly to the shape of the back. The two central blades B B are integrally formed from a piece of sheet metal suitably bent to form the two blades with a base II of suitable length corresponding to the length of the back, to be clamped under the flange C, formed around the edge of the back plate and turned under, intermediate rivets E being used between the ends to secure the base H to the back. similarly secured to the back by forming them with a flange I at the base clamped under the fiange on the edge of the back of the comb, and the ends of these blades are riveted to the ends of the inner plates B B.

The pockets F, formed between the inner and outer blades, are partially cut open by suitable apertures G at the ends for the purpose of allowing the contents to be blown through. f

I do not claim a curry-comb provided with metallic blades per se; but I claim the man- 'lhe outer blades arev ner of attaching the blades to the back, as it will be well understood that in this class of devices the consideration of lightness required makes it obligatory to use light sheet metal, and a difficulty arises to form a fastening for the blades stron genough to withstand the strain in using the device, and in the present constructions difficulty therefore is often experienced with the blades bending over. In my device themanner of forming and securing the blades obviates this difficulty and makes a curry-comb which is light and of suitable strength, while at the same time the dust from currying collected in the pockets can be readily blown or shaken out.

The two central blades are preferably curved on .the lower edges, as shown, and all the edges of the blades are preferably made smooth. The comb is also finished by covering the metallic parts with a hard coat of japan or other suitable material.

Vhat I claim as my invention isl. In a curry-comb composed of a back formed of sheet metal with flanged edges, two central blades formed of a single piece of sheet metal with a base extending under the flanges on the edge of the back and clamped thereby and intermediately fastened to the back, and two curved outer blades of sheet metal secured to the back by having flanges formed at their base which are clamped under the flanges on the edge of the back and having their ends united to the ends of the inner blades, substantially as described.

A curry-comb composed of a sheet-metal back A, having flanged edges O, two central blades- B B, formed of one piece of sheet metal with a base H clamped at the ends under the anged edges of the back and secured to the back by intermediate rivets E, and two outer curved blades B B', of sheet metal, provided with flanges I at their base secured by clamping under the flanged edges of the back and riveted together at their ends with the ends of the central blades, and the apertures Gr in the ends of the pockets formed between the central and outer blades, substantially as described.
