WM Mg@ Win/asses ag/niza am @www UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE ALFRED THOMAS ABBOTT, OF N EvV YORK, N. Y.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPEGIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,833, dated April 4, 1893.
Application led December 26, 1891. Serial No. 416,260. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED THOMAS AB- BOTT, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York,l1ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boekbinding, whereby bills and periodicals can be separately filed 'right or left, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in temporary binders; and the object of the invention is to provide a binderin which diierent periodicals or papers can be kept separate and distinctfrom each other.
With this end in view, my improved temporary binder comprises two outsideleaves or covers connected by a suitable flexible back, a series of intermediate division or partition sheets, and transverse connecting wires or threads which unite said division sheets and are adapted to support the periodicals or papers within the binder.
My invention further consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. y
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a temporary binder constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same adapted for use and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the same, with the periodicals or papers removed.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings, referring to which- A designates the outside inclosing covers of my improved binder, which covers are connected together at their rear edges by a suitable tlexibleuback a, as is usual. To the covers A and back ct thereof are attached, in any suitable manner, a series of division or partition leaves B, B', which are preferably composed of paper, of the desired thickness, faced with canvas, though any other suitable material may be employed. In the central division leaf or partition, B', equidistant from the upper and lower edges thereof, respectively, are secured two eyes or links F which extend continuously through said central division leaf and project slightly on both sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. Through the aligned projecting portions of the links or eyes F, on
both sides of the central division leaf or plate B', are passed metallic rods or connecting wires C which, at'ter passing through the eyes F, are bent at right angles to theirlength and extend through apertures or slots D formed in the intermediate leaves or plates B. Suitable strengthening strips P are attached to said outer leaves or plates B, as shown. After passing through the outer plates B, the connecting wires C are bent upon themselves to extend along said outer plates, and the ends of said wires or rods are passed through apertures D formed in the plates B and strips P above and below the apertures I), respectively, so that the pointed ends of said wires are covered and not in the` way when the periodicals inclosed inthe binder are subjected to examination.
To bind a paper or periodical or other publication within a binder embodying my improvements, the securing Wires are passed through the periodicals or papers M, which are arranged between the leaves or plates B, and the ends of said wires are secured inthe manner hereinbefore described and clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It desired, a number of di erent periodicals can be arranged between the central and either of the outer plates B and such dierent publications may be separated by suitable sheets secured on wires C.
-It will be seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, that any number of periodicals can be placed in the binder easily and quickly examined therein, and, if desired, easily removed from the same.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a temporary binder, the combination of the outside covers connected by a flexible back, the intermediate division leaves or plates arranged between the saine, the links IOG or eyes attached to the central division leaf, and the connecting rods extending through said eyes and having their ends secured in the outer division plates, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination of the outer cover, of the intermediate division plates, the eyes or links secured in and projecting on both sides of one of said plates, and the connecting rods extending through said eyes, and bent to pass through suitable apertures in the side division plates, to cover and protect the pointed ends thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a temporary binder, the combination of the outer cover, the intermediate division
