UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vROBERT EDVARD SHERLOCK AND MANFRED FREEMAN, OF GRENFELL,
NORTHWVEST TERRITORIES, CANADA.
SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,828, dated August 5, 1890.
Application iiled February 5, 1890. Serial No. 339,294. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, .ROBERT EDWARD SHERLOCK and MANFRED FREEMAN, of Grenfell, North-Vest Territories, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful `Show-Case, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in upright show-cases; and the object of our invention is to provide a simple and convenient show-case that will occupy but little floorspace in proportion to the amount of goods it displays; that will display conveniently a great variety of goods; that will effectually protect the goods from dirt and dust, and in which the display-cases may be adjusted to hold large or small articles Our invention is especially adapted to display small articles-such as fruits, candies, biscuits, &c.-but it may be used for other goods as well, and may be vmade in any desired size.
To this end our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, that will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figres.
Figure l is a front elevation of the showcase frame with two removable display-cases in position therein; Fig. 2, a vert-ical section of the same on the linex no of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a rear elevation of a display-case removed from the frame.
The frame of the device is composed of the standards A, which converge toward the top, where they are provided with suitable bolts a and nuts b, by which the top B is attached to them, thus forming a conical frame. The top may be provided with an ornamental molding, and the frame is provided at regular intervals with horizontal shelves C, which are notched, as shown,`to fit the inner sides of the standards A, and are'attached to the side standards by suitable screws and to the front standards by the latches d, which are attached to the sides of the Istandards and engage metal catches e upon the upper front edge of the shelves. The shelves will thus form convenient receptacles for the many small articles abouta store, and will also serve to stiften the frame. v
The standards A are provided with shoulders f upon their front edges, which extend the entire length thereof, and with lugs g, having a rearwardly-beveled top, which are formed on or attached to the sides of the standards. The lugs g are formed upon or attached to the standards upon each lside of the center standards and upon the inner side of the side standards, and they are attached in such a manner that the lugs of one standard shall be opposite, in a horizontal line, the lugs of the next standard, so that they will form an even support for a display-case, as described hereinafter.
The removable display-cases D are preferably rectangular in form, and should be of such a Width that they will iit between two of the standards A, and of such a length that vss they Will extend from one shelf C to another,
although the length may be varied as desired.
The cases D are provided With a laterallyextending flange D', which fits upon the shoulders fof the standards A and enables the case to slide thereon, with glass fronts E, Which may be ornamented,` if desired, and with-lugs h, which are attached to the sides thereof near the top, and which are beveled oppositely to the lugs g of the standards A, so that they will fit upon Asaid lugs, and thus hold the cases D in position.
The cases D are provided with a removable back F, which fits Within the frame of the case, and which is held in position therein by the slats H, which extend across the backs of the cases, and the ends of which are engaged by the diagonal grooves 'L' upon the inner sides of the display-cases D. It will thus be seen that the front part of the case D next the glass E may be Afilled with any desired vagonally downward, so that by inserting the IOO ends of the slats I-l in the slots they will follow up the back F as it is forced into the case D and hold it in position therein. By having the back F lit into the case in this manner it maybe easily inserted or removed, and Will eifectually prevent any dust from getting into the case and injuring the goods therein.
In practice there should be enough cases D to fill the frame, and as the standards A converge as they approach the top the cases D Should be narrowed accordingly, so that they will tnicely between the standards.
The cases D are filled with goods, the backs F inserted and held by the slats H, and the cases are placed in the frame so that the flanges D will rest upon the shoulders fof the standards A and the lugs 71, will engage the lugs g. The cases Will thus be held securely in place and a large amount of goods Will be displayed upon acomparatively small amount of floor-space.
lVe have shown the show-case frame composed of four standards A but it is obvious that the number may be increased to any desired extent, and, the size of the cases maybe made to correspond With the class of goods to be displayed.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a showcase, the combination, with an upright frame composed of standards converging toward the top, said` standards'having longitudinal shoulders upon their front edges and lugs with beveled tops upon their sides, of .removable cases having projecting flanges to engage the shoulders of the standards, and beveled lugs to 'engage' the lugs of the standards and hold the cases in position thereon, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a showcase frame composed of upright converging standards having longitudinal shoulders upon their front edges and beveled lugs upon their sides, of removable cases having projecting flanges to lit the shoulders of the standards, projecting lugs upon the sides thereof to engage the lugs of the standards and hold the cases in position thereon, and having removable backs iitting between the sides of the cases, with means, as shown, for holding said backs in'position, substantially as described.
3. The combination, With the standards A, having shoulders f and lugs g thereon, of the removable cases D, having ilanges D to fit the shoulders f of the standards, and lugs h to lit the lugsg of the standards and hold the eases in position thereon, said cases having diagonal grooves 1l in the sides thereof, removable backs F, land cross-slats H to engage the grooves c' and hold the backs in position, substantially as described.
et. A show-case consisting, essentially, of an upright frame having converging standards A, with shoulders f and lugs g thereon, the shelves C, suitably fastened to said standards, and the removable cases D, having' ROBERT EDWARD SHERLOCK.
