SAMPLE-TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 37 6,739, dated January 24,.18E8f. y
Application filed March 29, 1887.
.To all whom, it may concern: A .g
I Be it known that I, DAVID GOLDSTEIN, a
citizen oii theUnited States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sample-Tray for Holding and Displaying Wares in Show-Cases,- of which the following is a specication.
Myinvention relates especially to trays'for displaying articles of hardware, cutlery, and similar small goods-and merchandise in showcases.
` The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the' claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation in cross-section through a set of trays and show-case. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one support and portions of the tray at one en d. Fig. 3 is a plan or top View of a tray. Fig. 4 is a view of the tray'and the detachable bottom, these parts being separate. Fig. 5 is a perspective View -of-the end portion ofa tray with the end removed.
A A represent,V the trays, and B an inclosing-case, having glass top and front, after the usual form. l
C is a stringer'or support setting upright at each end of the case, and having rests or guides d at suitable'distance apart rising one above another, and also extending from the rear end forward to the front of each step or riser C. yTwo of these supports being set and fixed in position, the trays are .slipped into place from the rear, one above another, and, sliding on the guidestrips d, they are pressed forward, each one to the end of its supports. A position in the form of steps is thus given tothe trays, and the entire top surfaceof each tray is exposed to viewthrough the front and" top of the case. Each tray is, moreover, iu dependent of thejothers in its movement, and can be readily withdrawn at any time from the case to show the samples to customers without necessitating the handling ofthe other trays. l
The top surface, a, of the' tray is made to` hold samples of the different grades, qualities, or kinds of the articles contained in the case: and. to confine or fasten them in place I use vided the lifting-ring EX.
Seria-l No. 232,910; (No modeh) elastic tap-es or straps of the usualmanner of` securing various articles or sample cords, but
as animprovement upon suchmode of attach- A i ing samples.
I combine and provide at each strap or tapeV E a lifting-ring, `EX, for thev purpose of enabling i the tape to be drawn up clear ofthe board andl the sample to be withdrawn withoutftouching l The holdingtapes and` their lifting-rings are i shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The tapes are stretched I across the top surface .of the tray in lone,-two,
or more lines, as required by the Size'Land form of the articles, and they are fixed at kintervals to the surface by tacks f, leaving the portionsbetween these points! loose and free to be lifted from the surface for inserting the sample under the tape. To each ofthe unat'- tached portions between the points fis pro- G is a box-like bottom to be fastened against the under side of f n the tray, and having sides and ends of suitable height to, leave a space between the bottom and the trayl for a receptacle to contain duplit 'cates of the articles that are fastened upon the" `exhibiting-surface of the tray. .This part A is secured to the bottom by hooks g or other suitable catches in such manner that the twoy are fastened together and readily moved in vand ont 'in withdrawing or replacing a tray.
partments-by crosspartitions correspondingv f to the divisions upon the top, whereby each Asample-space on the tray will have a compartment appropriated to it in the box beneathg and from which an article can be easily taken to supply the customer without handling orl disturbing the sample. I, K I
As thesample-liolding part A is made de` tachable from the bottom G, it can be readily l lifted oft to give access tothe article in the s compartment or tohshow the samplesto a customer Without requiring the Salesman to han.- dle or carry this heavier bottom part, particu-- larlywhen it is filled with goods.
Now, asthus constructed and arranged for operation and use, it will be seen that there is considerable economy in space Within the show-ease. The articles are presented to view in such complete, attractive, and convenient manner that not only is there considerable saving in time to the .customer as Well as the salesman, but the articles are kept from being tarnished or injured by handling. It also affords convenience in the marking of goods, as the back edge of the tray furnishes a surface to hold price-marks for the sample occupying a position on the tray in line with the mark, while Vto the bottom or under side of the tray can .be afxed price-lists or descriptions of quality and other matter of importance to the salesman.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S
1. The hereindescribed exhibiting device, consisting ot' a case, a series of supports therein arranged in steps, the projecting portion of each `beingabout the dimensions of a tray,
and traysor holders inserted through the rear of the case and held on the forward end of said supports, so that the Whole top of the tray shall be displayed, and elastic sample-holding clamps on the tops of said trays, and compartments in the body thereof, as set forth.
2. The herein-described exhibiting device, consisting of a case having a series of supports therein arranged in steps, the projecting portion of each being about the dimensions of a tray, and trays or holders inserted through the rear of the ease and held in the projecting portions of the supports, said trays having elastic tapes E,secu red on their tops, and rings EX, secured in and extending above the tapes, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the. foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
DAVID GOLDSTEIN. [1..
