This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in portable sample-cases. My invention has for its chief object the provision of a sample-case that is adapted not 5 only for convenient portability for transporting samples or specimens of goods, ware, merchandise, and the like, but also for attractively exhibiting and displaying the transported samples or specimens upon a counter'or other My invention has for a further object the provision of a sample-case of the type and for the purposes stated having means preferably in the form of vswingableframes or wings upon which the specimens or samples may be suitably attached or suspended, and means in the form of Walls adapted when the case is closed to enclose the several wings and their attached samples or specimens and when the case is open to support the wings in upright swingable position for the display and exhibition for purposes of-selective sale or the like of the goods, wares, merchandise, or the like represented by said samples or specimens.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 illustrates in perspective a portable sample-case constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the case;
Figure 3 is a detail fragmental view of the case;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the case taken approximately on the line 4- 4, Figure 3 I Figure 5 is a sectional view of a slightly modified sample-case embodying my invention;
Figure 6 is a detail case of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a sectional view of the case of Figure 5, taken approximately on the line 77, Figure 6; and

elevational views of the case in open, upright, specimen-displaying position.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the'drawings, which illustrate practical embodiments of my invention, the case includes a preferably rectangular oblong rear wall or back A, hinged, as at 1, to and along the opposite side margins of which are opposed side walls B, B, each of which latter is laterally flanged along its opposite side or free margin, as at 2, and along its opposite end margins, as at 3, 3, the flanged or lateral continuations 2 and 3 of the side walls B being of such dimensions relatively to each other and to the back A as to neatly symmetrically buttwise meet when the case is closed. The walls A and B, including their lateral continuations 2 and 3, are constructed of any suitable material, such as, for instance, fibre-board or the like, the corners of the'case being preferably strengthened or re-enforced by preferably metallic corner-pieces 4;. Gentrally upon its oppositeend-margins, the back A is provided with metallic angles 5 adapted to protect the inner free corners of the side flanges 3 of the walls B when the case is closed. 7 As shown, the case is provided with suitable means, such, for instance, as the lock 6 and clasps '7, for releasably retaining the walls B in closed position, and also with a suitable handle 8 for the convenient portability of the case.
Fixed upon the upper face, and disposed along each of the opposite end margins of, the back 'A, is an angle-member 9, the upwardly presented legs of which are formed with registering series of apertures 10. Seated in one of said series of apertures, are hinge-pintles 11, and mounted for yielding movement in the other series of said apertures are spring-pulled headed pintle-providing studs 11. v
The co-operating walls A and B are adapted selectively both to enclose, as in Figure 1, for portability, and to support, as in Figures 8 and 9, for display or exhibition purposes, a plurality of individual wings C, each adapted for the attachment and display thereupon ofmerchandise articles, specimens, samples, and the like. To such end, each wing C includes a frame 12 of dimensions relative to the dimensions of the case, and mounted and supported within the frame 12 is a body 13 of any suitable material for the attachment thereupon of the merchandise samples, specimens, or the like to be transported and displayed, each frame 12 being provided at its opposite ends with projecting eyes 14 adapted for engagement by a pair of the opposed studs 11, 11, whereby the respective wing C is so secured to the wall A as to be eiliciently retained within the case when the same is closed, and yet may readily be relatively swung when the case is open and in upright position, as in Figures 8 and 9, for attractively displaying or exhibiting the particular merchandise supported upon the opposite sides thereof.
It may be stated that in so engaging a wing C with a pair of the studs 11, 11, the studs 11 are pulled outwardly against the tension of their holding springs 15, the particular wing C placed in position and engaged with a stud 11, and pull on the respective studs 11 then released, whereupon the wing is swingably engaged and retained by the studs 11, 11. In such manner, any particular wing C may selectively be conveniently removed or replaced as may be desired or as may become necessary incident to the particular goods or merchandise to be transported and exhibited.
- The modified display case of Figures 5, 6, and 7 is substantially identical with the preferred form as described and illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, both inclusive, except with re* spect to the mounting of the wings C. In such regard, the one angle-member 9 is provided with a. series of apertures 10, while the opposite angle-member 9 is flanged at its free margin, as at 9a, and provided with a registering series of open-end slots 10". Each wing C, in turn, is provided with projecting-pintles 14- adapted to seat in a registering pair of the apertures 10 and slots 10 for swingably securing the wing C to the wall A, the several slots 10 being closed and the respective pintles 14 reinovably retained therein by means of a bar or rail 15 disposed for slidable movement on the flanged angle 9", as shown.
The sample-case is relatively simple in structure, may be inexpensively manufactured, is conveniently portable when closed, may with facility be stood on end when opened for the display of the contained specimens, samples. and the like, and is especially useful for the eiiicient carrying and dis play by salesmen and others of goods, wares, and merchandise.
It is to be understood that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and 'combination of the several parts of my new display fixture may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined portable sample and display case comprising, in combination, a pair of rectangular side walls having right-angularly extending front and end wall-forming continuations, a rectangular back wall common to said side walls, the backwall being disposed intermediate the inner side margins of,
and hingedly attached to, the respective side walls, rails rigidly fixed upon the inner face and adjacent the opposite ends of the back wall, and a series of article-supporting rectangular wings having pivot engagement at opposite inner corners with said rails for swingable movement relatively to the back wall, said side wall continuations having a width substantially equal to one half of the width 01"- the back wall for butt-wise engagement in enclosing the wings when the case is in closed portable condition as a sample case, the side walls and their said continuations bracing the back wall in upright position when the case is open and endwiserested on a support in wing display position.
2. A combined portable sample and display case comprising, in combination, a pair of rectangular side walls having right-angularly extending front and end wall-forming continuations, a rectangular back wall common to said side walls, the back being disposed intermediate the inner side margins of, and hingedly attached to, the respective side walls, angle rails rigidly fixed upon the inner face and adjacent the opposite ends of the back wall, a longitudinal series of spaced studs on one of said rails, a longitudinal series of spring-pressed studs disposed on the other rail in opposed registering relation to the first series of studs, and a series of articlesupporting rectangular wings having eyes at opposite corners engageable by said studs for retaining the wings swingably in connection with the back wall, said side wall continuations having a width substantially equal to one half of the width of the back wall for butt-wise engagement in enclosing the wings when the case is in closed portable condition as a sample case, the side walls and their said continuations bracing the back wall in upright position when the case is open and endwise restedon a support in wing display posi tion.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
WM. OGHSE.
