To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. VILSON, of Montgomery Oity, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Frame-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvementin clamps for picture-frames or similar articles requiring' accurate and nice joints.

The object is to provideaclamp capable of receiving and holding frames of various sizes while the frame is being fitted and its parts are-being nailed or secured together. W'ith this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, the figure is a view in plan of my improved frameclamp.

A A represent a pair of parallel bars, the former of which has the guides l l secured thereto, While the latter is loosely mounted on the guides, and adapted to slide back and forth thereon as the exigency presents itself. Thus -the barA is fixed and the bar A is movable, and the movement of the latter is effected through a screw-threaded rod 2 projecting from bar A, where it is swiveled, loosely through bar A', and the head 3 on the rod, by being turned, forces the bar A inward or toward its mate, or outward, or else holds it in the required position after it is placed in position to hold the frame.

The bars AA' are furnished with undercut grooves 4 4 on their sides and the frameholders or blocks 5 5, loosely mounted on the bars, have corresponding depending ears 6 6, which fit in the grooves and prevent any movement except end movement. The bars are divided for convenience in setting the frame-holders or blocks by means of graduated scales 7 7, representing inches and fractions of inches to aid in placing the blocks or or holders are provided at diagonal points with iiXed lugs or posts 8 S, and at the outside corner with aremovable angular cornerpiece 9. This piece fits in a recessformed for it, and its lower end eXtends through the block, where it is held rigidly in place, and the holder or .block itself held on by means of set-screw l0, which, by impinging against the lower end of the corncnpiece, binds it against the bar.

From the description it is seen that no only may the bars A A be moved apart in one direction to the required distance and held in place, but also that the holders or blocks may be slid in the opposite directions and locked in position, so that the parts may be quickly accommodated to anysized frame. Furthermore, it will be observed that the corner-pieces 9 are removable. This is to enable the framemaker to make a kerf with his saw through the joint in the event that the latter is imperfect after being cut in the miter-box.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but- Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, ist 1. The combination, with fixed and movabl bars and means for locking them apart, of frame-holders adj ustably secu red to said bars, each frame-holder having rigid projections and an intermediate removable projection, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with lined and movable bars having graduated scales thereon and a screw-threaded rod projecting from one and passing through the other, of frame-holders loosely mounted on the bars, and means for holding them in place, said holders having removable corner-pieces, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination,.with a pair of clamping-bars having undercut grooves on their holders at proper distances apart.
