Description

(N0 Modell) J. MOONEY; SCREW CLAMP.
No. 378,896 Patented Mar. 6, 1888.
\Yxwswa NITED STATES PATENT @FFIC E.
JOHN MOONEY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
SCREW-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,896, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed September 27, 1886. Serial No. 214,623. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MOONEY, of Syracuse, Onondaga county,.in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Clamps, of which the following is a description.
My improvements are for the purpose of holding firmly the article to be clamped, whether having parallel, irregular, orinclined surfaces in any direction, by means of a strong and cheap construction.
My implement is described as follows, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation with all the parts united; Fig. 2, asimilar view with the bed and follower plates removed; Fig. 3, a sectional plan of the bed-rest on line yy of Fig. 2; Fig. 4., a vertical section on line .90 as, Fig. 1.
The several parts in the differentfigures are designated by like letters.
The frame of the clamp is of the usual form,
' consisting of the main bar a, with aprojection at right angles at each end, forming the bedrest and screw'holder, through the end of which latter a screw, b, runs parallel with the main bar a. Into this projection a thimble, c, is fitted, on which the female screw is formed to fit screw 1), having a flange on the under side to resist the thrust of the screw 0. By this arrangement the thimble 0 can readily be replaced when worn out, and the clamp quickly 7 and cheaply repaired.
The bed-rest or projection a has upon its inner face two elevations or bosses, p 10, raised above its surface, that form limited bearings at two points to afford a steady and even rest, upon which the article to be clamped bears when the bed-plate dis not in use. This bed-rest a has a dovetail rib along its upper face, on which the bed-plate d slides. The main bar a has a Tshaped rib along its inner face, which guides the end of the follower-bar, that is grooved to loosely embrace it. This followerbar is pivoted to the end of the screw 11 by a ball-and-socket joint, so as to assume different angles to adapt itself to the work to be clamped. This bar 6 is formed on its face similarly to the bed-rest a, having a dovetail rib along its lower edge to receive the follower-plate e, which is readily slid onto or off the bar 6 to suit the purpose for which it is desired.
The follower and bed plates are useful in wood-work and such articles as would be injured by the narrow rest and bar.
Having thus fully described my improved screw-clamp, what I claim therein as new is 1. As an article of manufacture, a malleable east-metal clamp, a a, as herein described, formed of a single U-shaped casting having a stationary removable thimble, c, as set forth, in combination therewith, for the purposes described.
2. In a screw-clamp, as herein described, the combination of the follower'bar e, having aT-formed groove in one end thereof, with the main bar a, having a rib thereon, the counterpart in its cross-section of the groove on the follower-bar sliding thereon, by which the bar is held in position in the manner herein described.
3. In a screw-clamp formed of the frame a a, as described, and the follower-bar e, the removable sliding follower-plate e, constructed and combined as and for the purposes specified.
4.. In the screw-clamp herein described, the combination of the sliding bed-plate (Z with the lower bar of the frame a constructed as herein described.
JOHN MOONEY.
