Description

(No Model.)
T. P. SCHWARTZ.
COMBINATION TOOL.
No. 433,098. Patented July 29, 1890.
W w amm WM wMm-emo TTn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. SCIIVVARTZ, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,098, dated July 29, 1890.
Application filed November I 8, 1389.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,lHOMAs I. SCHWARTZ,a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of (/alifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uombination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in Compound Tools; and it consists in the construction, novel combination, and adap: tation of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the entire tool less the pipetongs attachment. Fig. 2 is a side View of the pipe-tongs attachment. Fig. is a side view of the tool when in position for stretching wire. Fig. at is a side view when in position for use as pipe-tongs. Fig. 5 is a top view of the claw-hammer. Fig. (i is a top view of the head of the extension-handle. Fig. 7 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the forward portion of the wrenchhandle, showing the sliding head, also in section, in position thereon. Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line a: as of Fig. 6, and Fig. 9 is a top view of the clasp 0.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A represents an extension-handle, which may be used alone as a crow-bar or in combination, as shown, and it is provided at its outer end with a curved bifurcated toothed head A, having slots a or recesses cut in its respective bifurcated portions for the reception of lateral lugs g secured to the side of the wrench-handle portion 13, whereby a connection is effected between said extension-handle and the wrench-handle portion. This handle has T-grooves A in which slide the lugs of a clasp 0, having a loop attachment 0 and a roller 0 at its head, which impinges upon a bench I3 on the end of a wrench-handle B", which. handle is provided with grooves 11 in which slide the lugs of a head IS. The head of the hook C is inserted in a slot on the back Serial No. 330,800. (No model.)
of the wrench-handle B, which is also provided with a rachet-back engaging with the edge of the inner under side of the head B, the head 13 being provided with a spring Z), which when pressure has been brought to bear upon the forward portion of the head will permit the said head to move back and forth of the ratchet of the handle 13. The crow-bar or extension-handle A is provided with a corrugated head A, and the handle B is provided with a claw-head I3, toothed on its inner side, and a hammer 13 on its under side.
The above isa description of my compound tool as shown in Fig. 1, and as such it may be used as a wrench of various kinds and as a claw-ham m er.
In Fig. 3 is seen the tool in use as a wirestretchcr for the purpose of building wire fences, &c. In this use the head 13 is removed, the clasp G and hook C are placed in a horizontal position, and the hook U is inserted in a slot in the handle U the handle A being in an upright position. The claw of the head l3 will embrace the end of the wire, and any convenient object being used as the fulcrum, the handle A constituting the stretching-lever.
To use the tool as a pipe'tongs, as better shown in Fig. 4,I employthc handle A. The clasp O,being removed and reversed, is placed at any convenient point in the T-slots A The roller C then has a bearing beneath the handle. The book C is connected by a chain D to a pipe-tongs attachment 1), which is hook-shaped and has a corrugated or toothed surface within the hook adapted to operate in coi'ijunetion with the corrugated head of the handle A and to be adjusted to various sizes of pipe.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combined claw-ham mer, wrench, and crow-bar comprising the extension-handle A, provided with the grooves A the clasp C, roller C and book 0, the wrench-handle I3", provided with a ratchet-back and with the grooves I3 the head B, provided with the spring I), the corrugated claw-head B, and hammer B, all combined and operating as set forth.
2. In a compound tool, substantially as de- ICO scribed, the combination, with a crow-bar or handle having T-shaped grooves along its handle and its head bifurcated and toothed on its face and provided with a transverse slot upon its opposite side, of a Wrench-bar B having at its outer end a claw provided with teeth on its inner face, a hammer-head on its under side, the lateral lugs on its vertical sides to engage the slot in the head of the crow-bar, a long slot in its top side, and a bench B at its inner end, and the clasp 0, having lugs to engage the grooves in the crow-bar or handle, and the roller 0 and hook C, secured to said clasp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a compound tool, the handle-bar A, provided With longitudinal grooves in its side walls and the bifurcated curved head at one end, having teeth upon its curved face and a transverse slot cut in its opposite side, in
combination with the clasp 0, having lugs THOMAS P. SCHWARTZ. Witnesses:
