Description
(ModeL) G. H. PASSETT SASH FASTBNER.
No 432.390. Patented July 15, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HENRY FASSETT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
S'ASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,390, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed January 18, 1889. Serial No. 296,766. (ModeL) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY FAS- SETT, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to those sash-fasteners in which a rack-bar is fiXed to one side of the window-casing and a cog-wheel engaging said rack-bar and carried by the window is engaged by a catch for looking itagainst rotation, and hence supporting the window at the desired elevation.
The object of my invention is to simplify the constructions heretofore devised; and to this end my device consists of five piecesa rack-bar secured to the side of the windowcasing, a housing fixed to the side of the window contiguous to the rack-bar, a cog-wheel pivoted in said housing, and a weighted dog pivoted to an operating-lever and engaging the cogs of said wheel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my device as applied to a window and its casing. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device separate.
A represents the window-casing, B the window, and C the rack-bar secured to one side of the casing.
D is a housing or casing secured to the side of the window contiguous to the racli' bar C by four screws or similar fastenings (l. Journaled in the housing D is a cog-wheel E, the teeth of which engage with the rack-bar. Pivoted intermediately of its length on one of the screws (1 above the cog-wheel is a lever F, the outer end of which constitutes a handle, and to the other end of which is pivoted a weighted dog that consistsof a detent or finger G and an enlarged or weighted head H, wherewith the pivoted connection is made and from which said detent depends. The detent end of the dog works through a perforation I in the housing and engages and locks the cogwheel from revolution when the dogis allowed to fall by reason of its gravity; but when the handle end of the lever is depressed the dog is raised and the cog-wheel is free to revolve. The fastener is reversible, being made so by providing the housing with another orifice or perforation I, directly opposite the orifice I and on the other side of the cog-wheel. By recombining the weighted dog and lever in proper relation and fitting the point of the dog in the orifice I and passing the pivotscrew (1 directly opposite the pivot-screw dfrom which the lever has been removed through the opening in the lever the housing may be applied to the other side of the window, the rack-bar C being removed and applied to the corresponding side of the windowframe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the reversible housing D, having a cog-wheelE journaled therein and provided with orifices I and I, respectively, above and below the cog-wheel, of removable pivot-screws cl, reversible lever F, and a dog pivoted thereto and adapted to enter either of the orifices I I, depending on the pivot-screw d, on which lever F is pivoted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE HENRY FASSETT.
