0. O. GEHROKENS. APPARATUS FOR SUSPENDING WEARING APPAREL.
N0. 431,944. Patented Ju1y.8, 1890 Witnesses? d7- 9' Inventor, f Can/Q. (Aw AMlQM/A UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE,
CARL OTTO GEHRCKENS, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR SUSPENDI NG WEARING-APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,944, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed March 31,1890. Serial No. 346,104. (No model.) Patented in France October 19, 1889, No. 201,429.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL Orro GEHRoKnNs, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and relating to Apparatus for SuspendinglVearing-Apparel,(LettersPatent for the said invention having been granted to me in France, October 19, 1889, No. 201,429,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for suspending wearing-apparel, and more particularly such as coats and trousers; and the objectof the same is to permit the garment to be hung in such a position that the fabric of the same shall not be pulled out of shape by the weight of the garment, but much more endurably secured in its natural form. I attain this object by the arrangement and combination of parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a front and side view of my improved apparatus when out of use; Figs. 3 and 4, thesame views of the apparatus, (that part adapted to suspend the pantaloons being shown in active operati0n,) while Fig. 5 represents a modification of the apparatus.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
To the upper edge of the main frame dare connected the inwardly-bent ends of a C- shaped bow Z), of elastic or flexible material, in such a manner that the convex back of the bow is turned upward. In the middle, between the two ends, the said how 17 rests upon the shoulder c of an adjustable screw, the end of which is bent to form an eye a for hanging the apparatus over a peg or the like. By means of this screw, which is secured to the frame a, a greater or less degree of curvature may be imparted to the said bow h. The latter is adapted for the suspension of a coat, if desired, also of a waistcoat, in such a manner that the ends of the bow b will be received at the entrance of the sleeves of the garment, and the shoulder-pieces of the same will then rest upon the upper flexible part of the bow. In consequence of its flexibility the back of the said bow will stick close to the form of the garment, and it will therefore prevent the formation of ugly wrinkles and prevent it being pulled out of shape by its own weight.
. In some cases I combine with the apparatus described a device for suspending trousers, which consists, preferably, of a removable cylindrical rod f, journaled, by means of a pair of pins g, in suitable hearings or eyes (Z d in the main frame a. Vhen employing this device, the leg ends of the trousers are placed over the said removable rod f, so that the upper or waist part of the garment is caused to hang downward, and as the rod f, when resting in its bearings (Z d-flpresses the smoothlyarranged leg ends slightly against the lower smooth edge of the main frame a of the apparatus, the trousers will be stretched by its own weight, so as to regain its original shape.
In order that the trousers may be securely detained by the rod f, the pins g g'are eccentrically arranged, so that if duly laid over the rod f the excess weight of the trousers at one side of the rod will cause the same to automatically turn in that position in which the leg ends are clamped toward the lower edge of the frame a and so held rigidly by clamping. Besides, the shank of the eyes or bearings d (1' may be, by means of springs h and screw-thread, elastically and adjustably secured to the frame a, Figs. 3 and 4, which arrangement I would prefer in such cases where the same apparatus is intended to be used for garments made of very thick as well as of very thin cloth.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the flexible bow for suspending the coat and waistcoat in the described manner is made of two parts 2) b and also provision has been taken to prevent the rod f from slipping off the open eyes (Z d by accident when out of use. For this purpose an elastic disk 11 is se cured by means of its eccentrically-arranged pivot i within a recess of the main frame a of the apparatus in such a manner that if the said disk is turned outside of the frame it will bear elastically against the rod f and frame, the elastic or flexible bow secured thereto and having curved ends, and the central suspending-hook, as set forth.
2. In a hanger for Wearingapparel, the frame, the elastic or flexible bow having curved ends and flexibly connected at its center to said frame, and the central suspendinghook, as set forth.
3. In a hanger for wearing-apparel, the combination, With the frame, of the rod suspended from said frame and eccentrically arranged with relationto the lower surface thereof and the central suspending-hook, substantially as set forth.
4. In a hanger for Wearing-apparel, the combination, with they frame having a central suspending-hook, of the hearings or hooks having a yielding connection with said frame,-
and the rod having its ends supported by said bearings-or hooks, as set forth.
5. In a hanger for wearing-apparel, the combination, with the framehaving a central suspending-hoolgof the bearings or hooks having a yielding connection with said frame, and. the rod having eccentrically-arranged end pins engaged by said bearings 0r hooks, substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with an apparatusbeing provided with an elastic or flexible bow for suspending Wearing-apparel, a screw having an eye and serving for adjusting the curvature of the elastic or flexible bow and for attaching the apparatus to a hook or peg, substantially as specified.
7. In a hanger for wearing-apparel, the combination, with the frame having a central suspending-hook, of the rod suspended fromsaid frame and eccentrically arranged with relation to the lower surface thereof and a flexible disk eccentrically arranged'so as to bear on said rod, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of two witn csses, this 18th day of March,
CARL OTTO GEI'IRCKENS.
I'Vit-nesses:
DIEDRICI-LPETERSEN, CARL I-IAA KE.
