Be it known that I, IGNAZ BERGMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to that class of removable pens having the point or ink-holdin g portion arranged at an angle to the shank portion, so that an axial line through the former will be substantially perpendicular to the direction in which the hand moves while writing.

Heretofore the connection or neck portion between these two parts has been stiff and rigid, thereby making the pen-body unyielding against lateral vibrations.

Now the object of my invention is to render the body portion of the pen more soft and yielding to the hand and at the same time allow an easy, free, and graceful movement.

WVith these ends in view. my invention oonsists in the peculiar features and combinations of elements more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my pen as used in an ordinary pen-holder, showing the position of the point relative to the writer and to the direction in which the pen is moving; and Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the relative inclinations of the shank, the neck, and the reservoir-point portion.

The shank CL and reservoir Z) are connected by a reduced portion or neck 0, extending obliquely to the plane of an axial line m 00 1. This neck contains just sufficient metal to render it resilient, whereby the reservoir portion will freely respond to the pressure brought to bear upon the point 6, thus rendering the pen easy to write with.

The preferred angle which the reservoir portion of the pen is given relative to the shank is such as would naturally extend the point of the pen at a line perpendicular to the direction in which it travels, as previously mentioned.

In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the neck 0 extends upwardly away from the plane of the reservoir, whereby the point e of the pen presses upon the paper in almost a horizontal position. This formation still further facilitates the ease with which the pen may be moved over the paper, and, together with the resilient neck, produces the eifect desired.

Besides rendering the pen easy of manipulation, the ink-reservoir is separated from the shank in such a way as to prevent soiling the hands.

Having thus described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a writing-pen, a reservoir portion ar ranged obliquely to an axial line through the shank, and a neck connecting the two and extending upwardly away from the plane of the reservoir portion, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.

'2. In a writing-pen, a reservoir portion extending obliquely to an axial line through the shank, and a resilient neck connecting the two and extending upwardly away from the plane of the reservoir portion, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
