SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,896, dated August 22, 1893. Application filed February 21, 1893. Serial No. l163,161. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, IGNAZ BERGMANN, a citizen of the United States,residing at Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in pens of that class shown and described in Letters Patent No. 431,245, granted to me July 1, 1890, and the main object of the invention is to provide a pen which will be very elastic and easy of manipulation.

A secondary object of the present invention is to provide a light, elastic and durable pen which can be more cheaply manufactured than the forms commonly in use.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a pen, constructed in accordance with my invention, as it appears when used in an ordinary holder. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the pen.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the shank of the pen which may be of any desired size, material and form; and B designates the ink reservoir or head of the pen which terminates in a nib or point C.

As shown in the drawings, the head B preferably extends at a slight angle to the shank A; and said shank and head instead of being connected by a solid neck extending the full width of the rear end of the head are connected by aneck, the central portion of which is punched out or removed to provide two parallel, reduced connecting portions or members D. The connecting members, D, extend for a portion of their length in line with the sides of the shank and some distance beyond one end thereof; and, at an intermediate pointof their length, as at d, are bent to extend to one side and are connected at their outer ends to the rear end of the head B. The head B extends at such an angle to the shank or stem A that an axial line drawn therethrough will pass beyond the side of the shank A.

The head B, shank A, and connecting portions or members, D, are preferably made from a single piece and as the portions, D, are very thin the weight of the pen is materially reduced; and a very resilient connection is provided between the head and shank so that the head can readily accommodate itself or respond to any pressure on the nib or point C. This construction makes the pen easier to handle and causes the same to write more smoothly and evenly than the forms of pens commonly employed, in which the head and shank are connected by `a neck which extends from the middle of the adjacent ends thereof, or is of the same width as the head and stem.

The objection commonly made to pens in which the ink reservoir extends obliquely to the shank, t. c., that in using the pen a constant balancing of the reservoir is necessary to overcome the tendency thereof to draw to one side, is practically overcome by the construction hereinbefore described.

Although I have shown and described iny improved pen as having its head extending obliquely to the shank, yet I would not be understood as intending to limit myself to such preferred construction, as I am aware that by connecting the head and shank of a pen, which are arranged in the saine straight line, by a neck, the central portion of which has been punched out or otherwise removed so as to provide two parallel connecting members, the elasticity, eificiency, &c., of the pen will be increased. I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations in the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described, as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an article of manufacture, a pen consisting of a head, a shank and two parallel reduced members connecting the head and stem, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. As an article of nianufacture,a pen consisting of a head, a shank, and a neck con-` necting the head and shank and having a TOO (entral ,portion of its .body removed tofp'rovide two parallel members at thes-ides of the peu, substantially as and for the purpose described.
