TOBACCO-MOISTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,643, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed February 24. 1890. Serial No. 341,530. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: ficult of attention and moisten the part less Be it known that I, PHILLIP IIAMM, a citiexposed to atmospheric influences more than zen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, that from which the present demand is supin the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, plied.
have invented certain new and useful Im- I have sought to provide an apparatus that provements in 'Tobacco-Moisteners; and I do can be readily attached to a round or other hereby declare that the following is a full, shaped receptacle, and that will act as a closclear, and exact description of the invention, ure to the same, and at the same time that will which will enable others skilled in the art to moisten the top of the tobacco in the pack 10 whichit appertains to make and use the same, age, that being the part most exposed to atreference beinghad totheaccompa'nyingdrawmospheric influence, thereby keeping the toings, and to the letters of reference marked bacco in proper condition until entirely rethereon, which form part of this specification. moved from the package.
My invention relates to an apparatus for A designates an ordinary tobacco pail or 15 moistening tobacco, and has for its object to tub, from which the top is moved and the approvide an inexpensive, convenient, and ef- 'paratus for moistening the same substituted fective attachment to a pail, cask, tub, showtherefor.

A further object is to provide a combined D designates a depending flange extending cover for the package and moistener for the from the greatest diameter of the cover, and
contents thereof. E designates a like flange depending from the Afurther objectis to providea cover adaptcover concentrically of the flange D, the 25 ed to fit packages of different diameters. flange E being preferably of greater width r The invention consists in the parts and than that of flange D. combination of parts hereinafter described, The construction described forms an annuand pointed out in the claims. lar channel F, into which the upper end of In the drawings, Figure lisaside elevation the package rests, thereby excluding the air 30 of an ordinary tobacco-package with my apfrom the same.
paratus secured thereon. Fig. 2 is a top plan By reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of by making the flange E of greater width than the apparatus as applied to a rectangular reflange D the cover is adaptable to packages ceptacle, the top of the receptacle for moistof different diameters, the lines w x of said 3 5 ening being removed; and Fig. 4 is a longifigure illustrating the lower flange closing the tudinal vertical sectional view of the upper receptacle when of a diameter corresponding portion of a tub with my apparatus secured to that height, and the extendedportion above thereon. the lines a: a: showing the top and outer flange As is well known, it is necessary to keep closing the package. This adaptability to 40 tobacco in a moistened state to preserve its close packages of difierent heights is one of better qualities and render it fit for sale, for great value when it is considered that the if permitted to become dry it loses flavor and packages are not uniform in size.

Various devices have been employed by H designates a receptacle for a moisturewhich to cause an evaporation from water to retaining substance, preferably sponge, as
50 arise through the tobacco; but these are out shown at I, the receptacle being closed by a removable cover J. The receptacle for moisture is in communication with the package in which the tobacco is contained by reason of the cover A being perforated within the area of the receptacle, as at H.
In Fig. 3 is shown a construction adaptable to receptacles rectangular in form, the construction being the same with the exception of the contour.
In operation an original package of tobacco is opened and my apparatus placed as a cover thereon. The sponge is now moistened, preferably by a preparation consisting of simple sirup and glycerine, the evaporation of this preparation being just suflicient to moisten the tobacco the desired amount. hen it is de sired to gain access to the package, the hinged portion 0 of the cover is raised, and when a suffici'ent quantity has been taken from the package the portion 0 is closed and the, catch engaged, thereby excluding the air.
It will be seen that the apparatus serves the purposes of a convenient cover and also as a moistener.
That I claim isl. Theherein-described apparatus for moistening tobacco, consisting of a cover provided with two concentric flanges upon its under side, the inner flange being of greater width than the outer flange, and a receptacle adapted to contain a moistening substance, located upon the upper side of the cover and in communication with the contents of thepackage upon which the cover is placed, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A tobacco-moistening apparatus consisting of a cover comprising a stationary portion and a movable portion, and provided .With two concentric flanges upon its under side, the inner flange being of greater Width than the outer flange, and a receptacle adapted to contain a moistening substance, located upon the upper side of the stationary portion of the cover and in communication with the contents of the package upon which the cover is placed, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A tobacco-moistening apparatus consisting of a cover comprising a stationary por tion and a hinged portion, and provided with two concentric flanges upon its under side, the inner flange being of greater width than the outer flange, and a receptacle adapted to contain amoistening substance, located upon the upper side of the stationary portion of the cover and in communication with the contents of the package upon which the cover is placed, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP HAMM.
