PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM TISCH, OF LA GROSSE, WISCONSIN'.
CIGAR-NIOISYTENING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application nea May s, 1906. semi No. 315.087.
To ttZZ'wQ/oin/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TISCH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Moistening Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar boxes.
One object is to provide a strong, durable, light and inexpensive receptacle of the character stated therein provision is madeto protect the cigars against air, and, in one embodiment of the invention, to hold the cigars in upright or vertical position.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby the cigars may be kept moist or prevented from drying and becoming crisp and brittle. v
A still further object of the invention is to i provide a cigar box embodying such characteristics that it may properly and effectively moisten the cigars contained therein; and having means associated therewith whereby the cigars may be subjected to moisture insident to a moistening receptacle arranged within a show case at a point remote from the box.
.Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings arid finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a central, vertical section of one form of cigar box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the cup ofthe valve mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a detailed view'of the valve disk.
As premised in the Jforegoing one of the essential features of the present invention resides in the provision of means whereby the moisture from a pad or other moistening source in a show case may enter the moistening compartment of the box and give off the required degree of moisture to preserve the cigars, in direct contradistinction to boxes containing a compartment located within the box as the only source of means for maintaining the desired moistening effect upon the cigars. kTo this end, and referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings,
.the reference character l indicates the outer shell of a rectangular shaped box of any suitable material provided with a bottom 2 having a circularopenjng 3 for a purpose presently explained. An inner shell 4 is fitted within the outer shell l with its lower edges terminating short of the lower edges of the outer shell and engaging the upper face of a perforated bottom 5, between which latter and the bottom 3 is a moistening compartment for the reception of absorbent material 6 designed to be moistened to provide for a proper moistening of the cigars contained within the receptacle. While this formy of box has been described as being rectangular in cross section, and is shown in the accompanying drawings as of elongated form in vertical direction, itis to be understood that the box may be of any particular form desired.
Obviously the cover 7 may be secured to the box in any suitable manner, instead of as shown, wherein the inner shell 4 extends above the top of the outer shell l to provide a shoulder a for the support of the cover 7.
In the aforesaid opening 3 of the bottom .2 I arrange a valve designed to be closed when the cigars depend solely upon means within the box for their moisture and adapted to be opened either for purposes of ventilation or tov permit of the passage of moisture therethrough to the cigars from a moistening source located remotely therefrom. This valve mechanism consists of a cup 8 provided with an'annular, peripheral iange 9, the cup being designed to fit tightly within the aforesaid opening 3 of the bottom 2 with its annular flange 9 adjacent the lower face of the bottom 2, as shown.
To hold the valve against accidental dis-` placement Within the opening 3, the fingers 10, lformed as a result of striking up the metal of the bottom of the cup to provide the openings 11 therein, are adapted to be bent or fitted over upon the upper face of the bottom 2, thereby preventing displacement of the valve.
Pivotally mounted within the cup 8 upon a suitable pivot l2 is a disk 13 provided with a series of perforations 14, preferably the same in number as the number of perforations 11 in the cup. This valve disk 13 may be provided with a Iinger piece l5 to permit of its easy operation to throw the perforations thereof into and out of registration with the perforations ofthe cup, thereby, permitting moisture to pass upwardly through the absorbent material 6 and linto the box or to prevent air or moisture entering the box, as may be desired.
From the foregoing it will beunderstood Ioo that Where cigar dealers have show cases with moisteners they Will find it simply necessary moistening material of the boX Which latter in turn, being close to the perforated bottom 5 transfers the moisture to the cigars Without moistening the absorbent material Within the boX. In the event of the cigar dealers using my improved boX and not having moisteners Within their show cases, the absorbent material 6 may be moistened to preserve the cigars.
Having thus described my inventionJ What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tobacco boX having a removable top, a perforate partition dividing the boX into a tobacco compartment and a moisture compartment, the bottom of the box having an external recess provided With openings communicating with the moisture compartment, an inverted cup seated in the recess and having portions struck up to provide openings registering With the openings in the back of the recess,'said struck up portions being bent through the openings in the back of therecess forming fastenings for the cup, and a rotary closure for the openings pivoted Within V the cup and having openings for alinement With the openings of the cup.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM TISCH.
