, sELr-c osmG CONTAINER.
Application filed June 13, 1925. Serial No. 86,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. OPJPEN- HAMER, a citizen of the United States'of 'America, and resident of Fort Wayne, in
the county of Allen and State oflndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Containers, of
which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to improvements in self closing containers and the object thereof is to provide a closed receptacle for cigarette and cigar butts, ashes, burnt matches,
etc. Also, to afford a normally closed receptacle from which the content may be shaken out in operator.
quantities regulated by the These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which A Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a container embodying the invention ;and
Fig. 2 is a plan view projected from Fig. 1, a portion being broken away.
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in thedrawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention comprises a cup 1 provided with a removable cover 2, the latter having 1 an upwardly projecting neck 3 with an opening extending therethrough into the cup affording accessv to the interior of the cu I Elponthe cover is secured a spring member 4 consisting of a strip of metal, one end of which is rigidly fixed to the neck 3 from which point it extends away from the neck in the shape of a loop 5 to form a handle, and from thencethe plate extends over and is spaced above the neck, the outer end 6 of the plate terminating at a point beyond the neck so that when the spring is depressed the outer end portion thereof will strike upon the top of the neck and its downward .ing at the lower end thereof.
er than that of the opening through the neck, and the valve extends with its lower end below'the neck and normally In utilizing the invention cigarette or cigar butts, ashes or other refuse are thrown into the opening of the neck onto the valve,
and by manually applying downward pres sure to the knob or the spring, the valve is thereby lowered into the cup sufficiently to allow the refuse to slide off of the valve into the cup. When the pressure is applied vigorously the outer portion of the spring strikes the top of the neck causing the valve to be jolted while held suspended on the pin closes the openbelow the opening in the neck, so that the refuse may be thereby dislodged from the valve. When the pressure is removed the valve is drawn into closed position at the bottom of the neck through the reactionof the spring. .When it is desired to empty the cup, the cover is removed bodily therefrom and the contents disposed of. The cup and its cover as well as the spring gest, and the neck may be provided at its top with rests 11 for part1ally consumed cigarettes and cigars to add usefulness to the evice. Y 7
What I claim is g 1. A device of the class described, comprising a cup; a cover therefor having a neck with an opening extending therethrough; a spring attached at one end to the cover at one side of the neck, and forming a handle therefor, said spring extending over and spaced from the top of the neck, its
outer end portion extending beyond the opposite side of the neck, said spring having contact with the top of the neck and its downward movement limited thereby; a
conical valve operable to close the neck at' the lower end thereof; and a coupling pin extending loosely through the spring and the vertex of the valve, having a knob on its upper end above the spring and a head on its lowerend bearing against the lower side of the valve. 7 2. A device of the class described-comprising a cup; a cover therefor having an 0 ening therein; a spring on the cover exten ing over the opening; a conical valve for closing the opening at the lower end thereof:
and a coupling means loosely connected with the spring and the valve, said spring tending to hold the valve in closed position.
80 may be artistically shaped as fancy may sug- 5}. A closing means for a receptacle with an opening thereln, a spring attached to the receptacle and extending over the open-- ing; a valve in the receptacle operable to 5 close the opening from the interior of the receptacle; and a coupling means loosely connected with the spring and the valve.
4. In a device of the class described, a receptacle including a. cover therefor having W an, opening therein; a spring attached at EUGENE J. OPPENHAMER.
