To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK ANSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes;

, and I do hereby declare the following to be stem.

a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to, the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoking pipes and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim. v

I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which: I

Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through a pipe embodying the features of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the hinge of the closure.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bowl of the pipe which may be made of any material which may be found well adapted for the purpose and is provided with a handle B which communicates with an air chamber C formed in the upper portion of the bowl. Said bowl has a partition D at any suitable location therein, preferably below the opening into the'stem and said partition has a central aperture D leading therethrough and its upper surface E is inclined in order to prevent any moisture or nicotin from working up the sides of the bdwl to the Telescoping within the air chamber is a plug H having a flange H, said plug being adapted to be held within the air chamber and at different locations in order to increase or decrease the a1r capacity. lower portion of the pipe, designated by letter K, is adapted to receive the tobacco and is made air tight at its lower end by a closure 0 having an annular flange 0 there- .on which fits within the bowl and frictionally engaging the same holds the closure 0 in place. An opening Q is formed in the lower part of said closure which is tapering as shown and through which anymoisture which may accumulate within the bowl may escape. Said closure-is hinged as at R to the bottom of the bowl'and is adapted to swing open when it is desired to remove the contents from the bowl.

By the provision of a pipe made as shown and described, the tobacco is placed within the bowl K and confined by closing the cap 0, the opening Q allowing sufficient air to enter the bowl to cause a suitable draft.

The upper surface of the partition D being inclined, any moisture or nicotin may be prevented from working up the sides of the bowl to the stem, such moisture, however, ordinarily being evaporated by heat as it comes in contact with said inclined surfaces and thereby keeping the air chamber free from moisture.

It will be noted that theair chamber is of greater area than the tobacco chamber over which it is located and with which it communicates through a'small tube connecting the depressed or concaved bottom of the air chamber with the upper end of the tobacco chamber. The air chamber is hermetically sealed by a closely fitting cover having a downwardly projecting annular flange adapted to enter the upper end of the chamber and contact with the inner wall thereof. The greater area of the air chamber affords an abundant space into which the smoke is drawn through from the tobacco chamber and the smoke is thus allowed to cool beforev entering the stem of the pipe.
