OSCAR ALEXANDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COUCH OR LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,'750,dated J' une 10, 1890.
Application filed May 23, 1889. Serial No. 3l1,802. (No model.)
To all whom 't may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvenents in Couches or Lounges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to that class of couches or lounges having a hollow end head with a hinged top or cover; and it consists in a certain novel Construction of said hollow head, as hereinafter fully described, to form therein a ladys workbox or receptaele, with its parts facing the lounge-seat, rendering such receptacle convenient ot' aeoess to the occupant of the seat and without affecting the external structure of the lounge, leaving it unchanged in appearance from an ordinary lounge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a vertical longitudinal section of a couch or lounge embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a plan or top View thereof with a portion of the cover broken away to expose the interier of the work-receptacle. Fig. III represents a vertical cross-section thereof on the line 00 .00, Fig. I, with the cover opened. v
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates the bottom or seatfrane supporting the seat B, which is usually hinged at the front edge of said frame to unfold in a well-known manner, and C indicates a back frame, serving to convert the structure into a lounge, said franie being omitted in a conch.
At one end of the seat-frame A is a head D, which is hollow and open at the top, where it has a suitable cover E, the upper side edges ot' said hollow head being inclined toward the seat B, so that when the cover is closed it takes an inclined position, thus acting as a head-rest to the conch or lounge.
At the inner and lower part of the hollow head D, next to the seat B, is a well or pocket D', which opens in an upward direction, and at apoint above and outward from said pocket is a drawer I, which is arranged in suitable guides to slide in a direction inward to and in the longitudinal plane of the lounge, said position of the drawer in relation to the pocket causing it to clear the lat-ter in the adjustment of the drawer, while above said drawer is a shelf G,which also forms one of the guides for the drawer, each of these parts extending the entire width of the head. Said cover E of the hollow head is hinged thei-eto at the outer upper portion of the head by suitable joints s, to permit the cover to swing toward and from the head in the longitudinal plane of the lounge, said joints being preferably arranged at a point inward from the outer edge of the cover, as shown, causing said edge to act as a stop or abutment for the cover by its contact with the outside of the head when the cover is opened.
By said pocket D', drawer I, and shelf Gof the lounge-head it is adapted to receive and hold various articles, and especially such as are commonly used by ladies in sewing, thus forming a superior ladys work-receptacle, and one which may be entirely closed for protection against dust, the., by the cover E, and inasmueh as all of said parts are in a position substantially facing the seat B such receptacle is very convenient of access to the occupant of the seat, permitting not only the introduction or removal of the desired articles, but also the adjustment of the drawer as well as the cover without leaving the seat. By the arrangement of said parts, moreover, the external structure of the couch or lounge is left entirely unaffected, so that when the coverE is closed the appearance of the lounge is unchanged from the ordinary article, in contradistinction to a lounge having drawers or other devices on the outside to open outward theretrom.
In defining the scope of my invention I would remark that it is common to construet a lounge with a hollow head, including a hinged cover thereon, and I do not claim such, broadlyas my invention,. the essential feature of which is the novel arrangement of the parts of the head in relation to each other and the lounge-seat, as described, for practieally adapting it to the purpose of a work-.receptacle.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A couch or lounge having a hollow end head constructed with a poeket at the inner and IOO lower part opening Upward, :L (hawer above the whole fo'ning :L lady@ work-receptaele, said poeket at the oute' part of the head ara s shown and described. 'anged to slide inwt-dly and longtudin tlly 1 `1 T to the lounge, :L shelf above said dl'awe', and OSAR ALEXA 5 a top 01' cover hinged at the outer and uppe' itnessesz portion of the head fOl'tS &dj ustment tlereon, FRANCIS (I. BOWEN,
each of said parts faeing the lounge-seat and JAS. S. EWBANK.
