To all whom/'it may concern;

Be it known that I, GEORG-E H. GOETZE, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyiu g drawings, which My invent-ion relates to an improvement in closets, which are designed especially to be used upon rail road-cars; and it consists in the arrangement of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a closet which is especially designed to be used upon railroad-cars, and which is intended to have the vault closed while the car is standing in a depot or station, and thus adapt the closet to be used at all times.

The frame of the closet may be of any construction desired. Upon the top of the platform or covering C of the vault is hinged the seat A, which is held in a raised position, when not in use, by means of a spring R, which is applied to its rear edge, as shown. Connected to the under side of this seat and passing down through a slot in the top of the plat-v form C is a rod B, which is connected at its lower end to the cranked shaft X, which is journaled on the under side of the top of the vault, and to which shaft a flap valve or plate D is rigidly secured for closing the opening in the top of the platform when the closet is not in use. As soon as the front edge of the seat A is depressed the connecting-rod exerts a downward pressure on the cranked end of thel shaft and causes the valve to open downward. The moment the pressure upon the seat is removed the seat is raised by the pressure of the spring R, and the valve rises into position again.

Hinged or pivoted to one side of the lower edge of this vault is a pan or receptacle K for catching deposit, and which is connected directly at one end, or by a rod which projects f rom one end to a spring Z, and connected to the upper end of this spring Z is a rod a, which is provided with a series of ratchet-teeth for engaging with the edge of a slotted plate O, which is secured upon the top of the platform C. The upper end of this rod is formed into a handle, so as to enable it to be readily grasped by any person desiring to operate the receptacle K. The spring attached to the lower end of this rod allows any desired amount of tension to be applied to the pan or receptacle, so as to close itso securely that it is not liable to drop from any load or weight which may be placed upon it. Vhile the car is standing in a depot or station, or is passing through a city, this pan or receptacle can be made to close the lower end of the vault, so as to catch all deposit in the closet. After the car has left the station or passed vthrough the city it is only necessary to release the rod, when the weight ot' the pan or receptacle will cause it to drop and then all of the deposit upon it Vwill either drop off or be readily Washed off by pouring water upon it.

In order to prevent any one from moving the rod and opening the pan or receptacle, a pivoted locking device M is used, and which is operated by means of a suitable key or appliance of any kind, which will be retained in the possession of the brakeman or conductor. After the pan or receptacle has been closed this locking device is applied, so as to engage with the ratchet-teeth, and thus prevent any one but thosel having the key from opening the pan or receptacle and prematurely discharging the contents of the vault. This construction enables the closet to be left open at all times for the convenience of the passengers, whether the car is standing in a depot or not.

Extending upward from the vault are foulair pipes which conduct Aall odors outside of the car or building in which the closet is placed.

The combination of the platform, the vault secured to its under side, the pan or receptacle pivoted or loosely attached to one side of the lower edge of the vault, the spring connected at one end to the pan, and the toothed rod secu red to the opposite end of the said spring, its opposite end notched and eX- tending through and engaging the said plat-` form, whereby the spring holds the said pan tightly against the bottom of the vault, substantially as shown.

3. The combination of the platform, the vault secured to its under side, the pan or receptacle loosely connected to one side of the pan, an Operating-rod connected therewith at its lower end and extending up through the said platform, and provided at its upper por tion With notches, and a movable lockingplate secured to the under side of the platform for engaging and locking the said rod, the said plate being adapted to be operated from above by means of a key, substantially as set forth.
