To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN P. HANNAN, of

Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and Statev of Pennsylvania,have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Closet- Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to that class of closetseats designed for use on railroad-cars, boats, 1o and other similar places, and is intended to protect the user from exposure to cold drafts, snow, and dust, so objectionable in the use of an open seat.

To this end it consists in the combination, with an open-bottomed hopper or bowl and pivoted seat or foot-rest, of a valve pivoted in the open bottom ofthe bowlor hopper, and a spring-rod. for actuating the valve from the pivoted seat or rest, whereby the valve closes zo the bottom of the hopper when the seator rest is depressed, all as will hereinafter more fully appear. e

Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will describe its z 5 construction and operation by reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure lis a vertical section of the same. Figs. 2 and 3 are modifications of the same.

a represents the closet-seat of arailway-car, having a pivoted top, b, and a bowl, c. Ipivot in the cylindrical lower end, c', of the bowl a valve or bottom,d, which is pivotally connected with the lower end ot' a rod, e. The rod e extends from the pivoted lid b down along the side of the bowl c, and has a bend or upward crook, e', at its lower end, so that the said end may extend around the edge and up inside of 4o the lower end ofthe bowl. It is connected to the valve dat the near side of its axis. Mounted on the rod,and bearing against the collar e2 at one end, and against the i'loorf at the other, is a spiral spring, h. The rod e moves in suitable guides, i, and is preferablyconnected to the lid at k.

The operation is apparent. Vhen the weight of the user comes on the seat the rod will be depressed and will close the valve d, as shown by dotted lines. When the weight is removed 5o the springhy will raise the rod and tip the valve d, discharging the contents of the bowl.

Fig. 2 shows a way of operating the valve by means of a depressible step, l. Here the rod e is operated upon bythe depression of the step under the feet ofthe user.

Fig.3 shows a simple form. Herethe valve d is on the end of a leveryv, pivoted in the side of the bowl. The rod e is pivotally attached to the lever 'U and top b, and the spring h is 6o placed between the box a and top b. This construction may be used with the depressible foot-rest.

By the combination ot' the devices specified I obtain a simple, durable, and efficient closet, in which thebottom of the bowl is automatically opened and closed as required, and one well adapted forl use on cars, boats, Sto.

I am aware that pivoted soil-pans and valves have heretofore been operated from the seat 7o by various intermediate gearing, such as sliding racks and pinions, and do not herein claim suoli devices, as they are more expensive and complicated and lless durable and eflcient; but,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Iil a closet, the 'combination of an open-bottom hopper or bowl, a pivoted valve arranged in or on the open bottom of the hopper and 8o adapted to close the same, and a spring-rod attached at one end to the pivoted valve and at the other to the hinged operating device, substantially as and for t-he purpose specified.
