4 SANITARY ODORLESS TOILET.'
Application filed December 19, 1923. SerialNo. 681,613.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved toilet for railroad cars or other passenger vehicles which is sanitary and also odorless.
Toiletsof the kind now in igeneral usel on railway cars are subject to the objections that they are insanitary and they are odorous. ln use, it is found that particles of eXci'et-a deposit and accumulate on the lower portion or edge of the toilet pipe, this occur.-
ring particularly when there is a shortage' of flushing water, and when Ithe toilet -is is in motion', the pivoted cup which normally closes the lower end of the toilet pipe, swingsl downwardly into a position whichcauses a` which obviates' these object-ions, it being so constructed th at no upward airvdraft through the toilet pipe can take place, and hence neither bacteria'fnor odors can be blown into the toilet compartment or into the ca r.
To these and other ends, the invention consists lin certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the features of novelty being pointed out particularly in the claims at tlie end of the specifica-l tion.
.ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a sanitary toilet constructed in accordance -with the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 represents, on an enlarged scale, a vertical section through a portion of the toilet discharge pipe'showing the lower cup in closed position; i
Figure 3 represents a top plan ofthe structure shown in Figure 2;'
Figure 4 shows in elevationv the double cupoperatiiig means in an intermediate positiem-'at which time both cups are closed;
Figure 5 is a vview"simi lar to Figure et,
but 'showing the cup operating means lfully actuated into di'nnpingvpos'ition, at *which4 time the upper cup is open and the lower cup is closed; and Figure G'represents a line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Similar parts are designated by'. thesame reference characters inthe several views..
The present invention is applicable generally to toilets of the kinds suitable for use on detail section on the railway passenger cars Vorcoaches, passenger.
airships and in:l 'similar'situations `where strong air4 currentsfare fpresent .orfare induced. lThe preferred embodiment of the-invention isy shown in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter. described .ini de-v tail, but :it' is tobeunderstood thatfthe invention is `not restricted tothe precise"construction shown, as equivalent :constructions are contemplated and such willA be .included within the scope ofthe claims` In the present instance, 1- .designates `the bowl ofl a.- toilet 'havingiits outlet ,-2 connected preferably tov a discharge pipe, the latter being of suitablel length ,to suit any particulark installation. Accord-ing to the present invention, upper tand-lower. cups 4 and 5 areprovid'ed,,whicharearranged one above. the other. and are operative 'to so ,-control the .toilet pipe that .when foneof these cups isfin open position, thefother cupk will be in completely closed position.'.;.;Prefer.
ably and as shown .in the present instance, means is provided `for automatically actuating and controlling thecups so 4that' lthe upper cupwill be normally closediand the lower cup normally open, and l.when the mechanism is -actuated .into'fdumping position the lower cup is moved into fully closed position, while the upper cup remains closed, whereupon the uppercup moves into open position Whilejthe lowerwcup remains in closedposition; and thereturn movement of the actuating mechanism first causes thev upper cup to. closdduring, the 4period thelower cuplreinainsl closed, whereuponrfurther return lmovement -ofv the actuating iiiechanisincauses the lower cup to open, during `whichperiod the uppercup remains closed. Different forms of mechanism may be employed for accomplishingy these results. As shown in the present instance, the upper cup is iiXed to ashaft f'wliich issuitably mounted rotatably in the wall of thetoilet pipe'2 and; extends .outside-thereof,and the lower cup' l5 is fixed'toa shaft 7 which may be i-otatablyinounted; on f the lower end of the pipe-lf2l or .in the discharge pipe\3. this shaft :ilsohextending to the outside" of the" pipe 3, the mountings of the oups being` sueh that they may swing tonnel 'from closedv position about the shitsd'niid?, re's'peetively, as axes.
