SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,227, dated June 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLIF. L. BURGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Clothes- Prop, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to clothesprops; and the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a prop constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being arranged in operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective, the prop being collapsed or folded. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the upper or line-engaging end; Fig. 4, a similar View of the lower or anchoring end. Fig. 5 is an illustration of one of the novel features of my invention applied to a rnodi fied construction of prop.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

' 1 1 represent opposite sections formed of strips of wood of suitable proportions and connected and spaced apart at their upper ends by means of a collar 2, bolted to the strips by bolts 3. At the lower ends of the sections is a collar 4., the lower edge of which terminates in opposite anchoring-points 5, said collar being bolted to the sections, as at 6. Intermediate the ends of the sections, and at a convenient height from the lower end, a third collar 8 is mounted on the opposite sections, the same being bolted, as at 9, to said sections and provided with a perforated stud 10, internally screw-threaded, in which is mounted a set-screw 11.

By reason of the rectangular collars mentioned a space 12 is formed between the sections 1, and mounted for sliding movement within the same is the extension-section 13, upon one edge of which the set-screw 11 is adapted to bind, and thus maintain the extension section at any elevation desired. The lower end of the section 13 is provided with a rectangular collar 14, bolted thereto by bolts 15 and embracing the opposite sec tions, the said collar 14 guiding and sliding with the section 13. The upper end of the section 13 is provided with an L-shaped strap 16, provided at its lower end with a suitable handle 17, and having a longitudinal slot 18, which receives a bolt 19, projecting from the edge of the extension-section, which bolt carries a set-nut 20. By means of the bolt 19 and its nut the strap 16 may be raised and lowered upon the section 13. The upper end of the strap 16 or that forming the L is provided with an eye 21, and the free terminal of the strap is bent parallel with the shank of the strap and loosely embraces a recess 22, formed in the outer edge of the section 13.

In practicing my invention the strap is swung outwardly upon its pivot, in order that the clothes-line may be received thereby, and then returned to a vertical position with relation to the section 13. WVhen thus connected by means of a suitable handle 23, projecting from the lower edge of the section 13, said section may be extended or slid up vertically from between the sections 1, and the set-screw 11 screwed up to bind upon the section, and in this manner the clothes-line supported at a proper height, the anchors 5 at the bottom of the device taking in the ground and maintaining the prop against accidental displacement.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated the rope-receiving device applied to the upper end of a form of prop, consisting merely of two sliding sections adj ustably connected.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An extension clothes-line prop consisting of two opposite sections, collars mounted on the sections for spacing the same apart, one of said collars being provided with a binding device, and an intermediate sliding section, against which said device is adapted to act, substantially as specified.

2. In a clothes-line prop, the combination, with the lower section, of the upper sliding section, a clothes-line-engaging strap adjustably secured to said upper section and adapted to be extended beyond the same, collars connecting the sections adjustably, the lower one of said collars terminating in a series of anchoring-points, and a set-screw mounted in one of said collars, substantially as specified.
