No. 427,299. v Patented May 6, 1890.

CHARLES H. CARPENTER, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
NATURAL-GAS BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,299, dated May 6, 1890. Application filed August 16, 1889- Serial No. 321,030. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. CARPEN- TER, a citizen of the United States of America,
- residing at Richmond, in the county of WVayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Natural- Gas Burners of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of burners used in the economical combustion of natural gas for domestic purposes, and more especially to burners having in each instance a cap which is set into a channel formed on the upper face of a tray-bottom part or base.
The said invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the burner, showing the perforations for the escape of the gas and the projecting edge of the tray or bottom part of the burner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa top plan view of the upper surface of the tray or bottom part of the burner, showing the inlet-pipe and the deflecting-plate and the recess or channel around its outer edge. Fig. 4. is a vertical longitudinal section of the tray or bottom. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the burner. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section.
In Fig. 1 A represents the tray or bottom part of the burner, which is in the form of a rectangular plate, having its outside edge flanged at right angles, forming a rim projecting upward from the horizontal plane of the bottom plate. Immediately inside of the rim there is placed a rib or bar corresponding in form with the outside rim, which is raised to nearly the same height as said rim, as seen in Fig. 6 at L, the raised rim and rib thus forming a channel or recess into which the vertical sides and ends of the cap or cover fit loosely, as seen in Fig. 6. The top surface of the cap or cover is studded with rectangular projections raised vertically from the surface marked 11 i 2 412', which give strength and radiating-surface to the cap, and it is also provided with numerous perforations n n n n 'n for the escape of gas in the process of combustion. An ornamental plate It occupies the central position on the top surface of the cap or cover B.
In Fig. 2 1) represents the inlet-pipe by which the gas is admitted to the burner. A inFig. 3 represents a deflector-plate placed vertically at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the burner near to and opposite the inlet-pipe and serves to spread the current of gas as it is admitted to the interior of the burner and distribute it more evenly throughout the gas-chamber. The upper surface of the cap or cover B is divided into three longitudinal sections by the lines 0000, each of which sections has a curved surface flattened medially, as shown at m m m, Figs. 5 and 6. These convolutions serve to in a measure equalize the expansion and contraction of the cap or cover B and to prevent cracking or breaking. The recess or channel 0 e c eis to be filled with sand or other suitable substance to form a packing which is self-acting, and prevents the escape of the gas between the top and bottom parts of the burner. It will be seen that I thus construct a burner composed of two parts which requires no bolts, clasp, allows of the expansion or the contraction of either part without strain upon the other.
Having thus fully described my said improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gas-burner, the combination, with a base having a flange, a supplemental inner ridge, the inlet-pipe, and a gas-deflector, all cast in one, of a perforated longitudinallyridged cap B, fitting in the channel formed by said outer sides and inner ridge, and projections z', strengthening said cap-B, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I Et'ffiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. CARPENTER.
