Inventor ,H e Witness I J 747% f y@ BY r l l Attorney UNITED STATES Patented June 14, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,408, dated June 14, 1904.
Application filed March 22, 1904.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oNAs H. HERRIFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of N eosho and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an'improved hydrocarbonburner especially adapted for use in heating and cooking stoves for burning crude oil, but also adapted for other uses; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described Vand claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of my improved crude-oil burner, showing the same disposed in a firebox of a stove of ordinary construction. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the crude-oil burner, taken on the plane indicated by the line ."0 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 1/ y of Fig. l. The bowl A of my improved crude oil burner, which may be either of the form here shown or any other suitable form, is provided with a central opening l and a transverse opening 2, which extends from the opening'l to one side of the bowl, and the latter is formed with upstanding flange-walls 3 4L on opposite sides of the opening 2 and around the opening l, respectively, to prevent oil from escaping from the bowl through the said openings.
T he oil-supply pipe B has the upturned portion 5, which extends upwardly through the opening l. The opening' 2, which forms a slot in the bowl, clears the said upstanding portion of the supply-pipe and enables the same to be readily placed in the bowl and removed therefrom and also enables the bowl to be removed from the interior .of the stove without affecting the' oil-supply pipe. The oil is fed from the upper end of the said upturned portion of the supply-pipe onto a hood 6, which is disposed above the bowl and serves to spread the oil in a thin film to facilitate its combustion and prevent any of the oil from reaching the bowl. Initially, however, before the burner is in full operation some of the oil reaches the bowl from the said hood, and in Serial No. 199,458. (No model.)
opening 2 under one side of the hood and disposed to connect the walls 3, the said cover having oppositely-inclined sides which serve to direct such oil as may fall thereon from the hood into the bowl and prevent any of the oil from dropping through the opening 2.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-Y 1. A burner of the class described, comprising a bowl having a central opening, an opening extending therefrom to one side of the bowl, and walls for said openings, in combination with an oil-supply pipe having a hood above the bowl, and a cover under the hood, connecting the walls of the opening which extend to one side of the bowl, said cover being removable at will.
2. A burner comprising a bowl having a central opening, an opening extending therefrom to one side of the bowl, and walls for said openings, in combination with an oil-supply pipe having a hood above the bowl, and a Y cover under the hood connecting the walls of the opening which extend to one side of the bowl, said cover being removable at will, and having oppositely-inclined sides, substantially as described. f
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JONAS H. HERRIFF.
