SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,698, dated April 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, FREDERICK W. WVIL- COX and WILLIAM D. MOSHIER, of the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Pails; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in .paper pails.

In the drawings similar letters and numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

Figure 1 shows our pail complete and closed. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the same, taken on the line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section on the line C D of Fig. 1, showing the inside of one of the sides of the pail. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the same cross-section shown in Fig. 2, but on a larger scale. Fig. 5 shows the blank from which the pail is formed. Fig. .6 shows the blank partially folded into form.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates that portion of the blank which forms the bottom inclosed within the folding lines 1 1 1 1 The sides are indicated by 2 2 and 4 4 and the cover by 5. The sides 2 are determinedby the folding-lines 2 upon either side thereof and the line 1 at the bottom. A flap 3 is provided, attached to the sides 2, and divided therefrom by the folding line or crease 2 The flap 3 projects beyond the peripheral edge of the adjacent corner-pieces of the sides 2, to which the flap is connected. Between the adjacent sides are two corner-pieces 6 and 7, divided from the sides to which they connect by folding lines or creases 4 and. 2, respectively, and from each other by the folding or creased line 13. The cover 5, which may be omitted, is divided from that portion of the sheet which forms the body of the pail by the folding line or crease y, and is provided at its sides with flanges or leaves 5" 5", divided from the body of the cover by folding lines or creases 5 5, and is also provided with a flange or leaf 5 divided from the body ofthe cover by the folding line or crease 5".

The pail is provided with a bail m, having an inwardly-bent hook passing through several thicknesses of material folded together, the points at which the bail passes through the material being shown by twelve dots on the blank in Fig. 5.

The pail is formed by folding the cornerpieces inward from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 6, and thence inward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, until the corner-pieces lie together on and parallel with the sides 2. The flap-piece 3 is then turned inward over the compiled, edge, as shown in Fig. 4, the several thicknesses punctured and the bail inserted through the openings.

When the pail is filled, the cover may be closed, the flanges 5 and 5 passing inside of the open top. After the cover is passed into place the ends of the hook of the bail may be slightly bent inward, as shown at n, securing the cover in place; or the hook n may beformed when the pail is constructed. The notch in the side 4 (indicated by m) is provided so that the edge of the cover can be reached by the fingers to open the same.

It is evident that alterations in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.

A particular feature to which we wish to call attention is that the pail is strong in the top, and the tendency of the sides 2 to come together by reason of the springing of the bail when the pail is filled with liquid or semiliquid, and thus allow the sides 4 4 to bend outward, is entirely or largely prevented by the strength of the material in the upper edge of the pail and the manner in which the cover braces the same, the construction of the bail facilitating in holding the cover in alignment between the sides, so that the full strength of the material is effective.

It is evident that the pail may have parallel sides instead of diverging sides, as shown, this depending on the relative directions of the lines 4 and 2. When these lines form IGG a rightangle, the pail will have parallel sides, but when less than a right angle it will taper from the bottom upward.

Our pail may be constructed without glue or any cement of any kind.

That we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A paper pail having the sides 2 and 4 and a bottom 1, the corner-pieces 6 and 7, the cover 5, having inwardly-turning flanges 5 and 5", and the flaps 3 on the ends of sides 2, all formed from a cut blank, separated from each other by folding lines or creases, the flaps 3 projecting in the blank beyond the peripheral edge of the adj aeent corner-pieces and in the pail, turning over the compiled edges of the overlapping corner-pieees of each side and secured by the bail passing through the edges of the side pieces, corner-pieces 6 and 7, and flaps 3 of each side, and having inwardly-tnrning hooks 02, adapted to secure the cover 5 in closed position, as set forth.

2. A paper pail having bottom piece 1, side pieces 2 and 4, corner-pieces (3 and 7, fiap pieces 3 on the ends of side pieces 2, cover5, and cover-flanges 5and 5",all formed in one piece and divided from eachotherbyfolding or creasing lines, the corner-pieces 6 and 7 folding together and upon the inner side of the side pieces 2 and the flap-pieces 3 turning over, the folded and lapped corner-pieces lying upon the side pieces 2 to bind and strengthen the same, and the bail passing through perforations in the corner-pieces and side pieces 2 and the flaps 3, and having the inwardlyturned end or hook "it, adapted to engage the cover, substantially as set forth.
