UNITED STATES PATENT rEicE.
\VALTER G. HAAS, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE DAYTON PAPER NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,868, dated December 27, 1898.
Application filed A t 30, 1897. Serial No. 649,908. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WALTER G. HAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper pails, which consist in inner side flaps adapted to cover the upper edges of the side folds, said folds being so slit as to preserve the integrity of said flaps, and thereby securing a covering for the entire top of said side folds. There are two objects. One is to prevent the escaping of liquid as the pail is being filled and the other to stiffen the sides of the same.
The construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the form of blank in outline and creasing to form the pail when folded. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pail.
Like letters and numerals designate like parts in the two views. 1
The general form of the blank is like those in general use, and the special features of the invention are the integral side flaps to cover the edges of the folded sides, and to accomplish which slits are provided, as hereinafter specified, which make it possible to turn down said side flaps over said folds and preserve the integrity of said flaps. The blank A is formed of stiff paper in outline, as shown in Fig. 1, and as a completed vessel in Fig. 2. The creasing of the same for folding is indicated by dotted lines. The oblong square 1 forms the bottom of the vessel; 10 11, the sides; 44:, the ends; 2 3 and 5 6, the four corner-folds; 9 9, the end top folds, forming the lids, and 7 7 7 7 forming the side top folds, and these parts, with the wire handle, complete the vessel. The hooked ends of the handle bind firmly the parts comprising the sides of the vessel. The folded metallic plates B B embrace the edges of the covering-folds 9 9 to stiffen them, and these serve as crossbraces to support the sides when the lids are closed. The use of the flaps 13 and 14 is to cover the edges of the side folds, and it is evident that to do this provision must be made within the folded parts to receive said flaps. 011 both sides of the blank, to the left, at s s, are slits nearly central in the edge of the corner-folds 6 6 and slits t f on the opposite side in the folding-lines of 5 and 6. When the sides are folded, the position of these slits is indicated by dotted lines 3 t, Fig. 1, and the folded-down flap 13 is indicated by dotted lines at w. The edges of the folds 3 2 and 2 3 are shown by dotted lines a o. The side covering-flaps are preserved in their integrity by entering the two specified slits, into which they enter as they are pressed downward over the side folds. In making the slits the paper is simply cut through, no portion being cut away. The flap entering these and the parts being pressed together and secured by the loop of the bail, leakage is impossible.
I am aware that a notch out in the covering-flap of a paper vessel, producing, essentially, a divided flap, had been used for a like purpose prior to my invention as herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture and commerce a paper-pail blank having the side flaps or folds, slits therein and a continuous side covering-flap adapted to turn over said side folds and enter the said slits and a handle for securing said flaps in position, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A paper-pail blank comprising the side folds, the side covering-flaps, the slit t, in the crease of one of the side folds and the slit 3, in the other side fold, both being parallel and registering when the blank is folded and adapted to receive and secure the side covering-flaps, and tightly close said slits as bound by the hooked engaging ends of the wire handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER G. HAAS.
