Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York,

5 have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Lock and Support for Cables, tbc., of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an appliance adapted to be used as a means for supporting and 1o locking in proper position cables, wires, pipes, tubes, tbc., and has for Iits object the provision of a device simple in construction, cheap in manufacture, and efficient in practical use.

To attain the desired end my invention conr 5 sist-s in the construction and arrangement of parts described, and hereinafter pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings which form a part of this speciiication,Figure 1 represents a front elezo vation, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, of my improved cable lock and support; and Fig. 8 is a view in detail of a modification.

Like letters of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the iig- 2 5 ures.

Referring again to the drawings, A represents my cable-support provided with a forwardlyprojecting shelf or ledge forming a bracket, the bottom of which is extended lat- 3o erally on both sides, as at A2, in order to furnish a better bearing or supporting surface. The bracket A2 A2 is provided with a concave groove in order to conform to the contour of and to properly sustain cables or other cylin- 3 5 drical bodies, and the bottom of the groove A is also made somewhat convex in order to avoid any strain, wear, or other injury occurring to the cables and like flexible articles which have a tendency to sag by reason of 4o the level bearing and sharp square edges of the hooks and like supports hitherto used.

The supports A are preferably provided with an invertedeV-shaped pointed top a, and

5o also with a similarly-formed recess a', placed at the lower rear portion thereof, which serve as guides whereby a series of supports may be readily placed in a vertical position, each support being situated directly over the lower one.

The supports A are engaged with a retaining-rod D, in order to hold tlie cables G in such a manner as to prevent their removal. This may be accomplished in any suitable manner, as by providing the flanged edges of 6o the brackets of the supports A with orifices a3, through which a common rod D may be inserted after cables G have been laid in the same, the rod D being provided with a head d and a slot d', which latter serves to 65 sustain a padlock E or equivalent locking device of any suitable construction; or, as shown in Fig. 3, the cables may be locked by means of the engagement of the head d of the retaining-rod D with one bracket, and the hinged 7o extremity of the same being secured to another support by a padlock inserted through the slots d and at. An additional plate lF may, if desired, be placed over the highest bracket of a series of supports Aand engaged 7 5 with the same and with the retaining-rod lD in such manner that the top cable G will also be securely thereunder locked.

It is manifest that my invention provides a ready and reliable means of safely locking 8o wires, cables, pneumatic tubes, and pipes and conductors of any description in the position in which it is desired that they should be permanently located, and prevents any danger of any tampering with or removal of the same. 8 5

As it is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not re- 9o strict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes, and that VhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by 9 5 Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with a cable-holder and with a cable, of a retaining-rod supported in a movable relation above the cable, and a lock E, whereby the retaining-rod is rigidly held roc adjacent to the cable-holder, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a cable, &c., holder provided with a supporting convex groove, as and for the uses and purpose set forth.

3.` A cable, &c., support provided with a widened bracket AZ A2 and with a convex groove A', as and for the uses and purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with a series of supports A, provided with brackets A2 A2, of a common back B, substantially as described.

5. The combination, with the supports A,

of the retaining-rod D, as and forthe uses and purpose setforth.

.6. The combination, with the supports A, provided with engaging devices, as the orifices a3, of the retaining-rod D, provided with a` head d, and ofthe locking-padlock E, substan- 1 tially as described.
