NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. \VALKER, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PORTABLE OVEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,085, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed July 1, 1889. Serial No. 316,204. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE XV. VALKER, of Malden, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Portable Ovens, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters 011 the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to cooking apparatus, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient portable oven, constructed as will be described, whereby the heat radiating from a stove or other heater in the oven may be diverted into either compartment of the oven, or whereby both ovens may be heated alike.
In accordance with my invention an outer casing, preferably made of double walls having an intervening air -space, is divided by a central wall or partition extending from the top toward the bottom of the casing to form two compartments, one or both of which may be provided with a bottom to form below it a chamber, in which is placed the stove or other heater. The bottom of one or both compartments may bemade, as will be described, whereby the heat from the stovechamber may be diverted into either or both of the said compartments, so that a quantity of food may be cooked in a substantially short time with substantially little heat.
The particular features of my invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partially broken out, of a portable oven constructedin accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the oven shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the cap for the smokefunnels being broken away 5 Fig. 3, a transverse section of the oven shown in Fig. 1 on line 0: 0c, and Fig. 4 a sectional detail to be referred to.
The casing or oven, which may be of sheet metal or other suitable material, is preferably provided with double walls a, secured together in any suitable manner to leave an intervening air space a which, if desired, may be filled with magnesia or other nonheat-conducting material.
The casing or oven, in accordance With my invention, is divided into two compartments a by a central wall a extended from the top of the inner wall a toward the bottom of the casing, it extending, as herein shown, preferably nearly two-thirds the height of the oven. The compartments a a may both be provided with bottom plates a preferably secured to the central wall and to the inner wall a of the casing, and forming below the compartments a chamber a in which is located a stove b or other heatersuch, for instance, as a gas-burner. The bottom plates a o are preferably provided with a series of openings at, of any desired or suitable area, which may be closed, preferably, by sliding dampers b h, herein shown as located above and resting upon the said bottom plates; the said dampers having rods 11 1) extended through the front wall of the oven, so that they may be operated from outside the oven.
The stove Z1 which may be of any usual or well-known construction, such as now commonly used, is provided, as shown, with two outlet-nipples b I), (see Fig. 1,) upon which are fitted stove pipes or flues b Z2 respectively. The stove-pipes Z2 11 extend upward through the compartments (0 a on opposite sides of the central wall, and, as herein shown, the said pipes extend through the top of the casing or oven and terminate within a hood 0, upon which is fitted a cap c,provided with an outlet nozzle or pipe 0 the said cap also having, as herein shown, elbow-pipes 0 c fitted upon nozzles or pipe-sections a, com-- municating with the compartments a a only one of said nozzles being shown in Fig. 1.- The hood 0 contains within it, as herein shown, two sliding dampers 0 (3 adapted to close the pipes b Z2 respectively, at their upper ends when desired, the said sliding dampers being operated, as herein shown, by means of rods 0 0", extended through the hood and having a bearing in a plate c located at the front of the oven. The compartments (0 a may be normally closed by suitable doors d d, and the chambers a may be provided, if desired, with dampers (1 only one of which is shown in Fig. 1. Each compartment a a may be provided with suitable ledges (1 secured to the inner wall ct and to the central wall a to support shelves (1*.
In 0 eration a fire may be started in the stove b", and both of the dampers c 0 maybe opened to permit the smoke and products of combustion to pass up through both pipes b 19 the heat radiating from the said pipes assisting to heat the compartments a a Either or both of the compartments at a may be heated directly by the heated air from the chamber a by opening both the dampers that is, by moving the said dampers so as to uncover the openings a in the bottom plates. In this Way both compartments may be used for baking or cooking purposes; but if it is desired to employ only one compartment for cooking purposesas, for instance, when only a small quantity of food is to be cookedthe heat from the chamber 60 is diverted into the said compartment, and as a result the food may be cooked with a substantially small the stove b Will pass up through the pipe b and out through the nipple 0 It will thus be seen that substantially all the heat passes through the oven a, and that a small quantity of food can be cooked in a shorter time than if the entire oven were heated.
My improved portable oven is especially adapted to be used in restaurants and similar places, and especially in the summer-time in camps.
I claim 1. In aportable 0Ven,the combination, with an outer wall or casing, of a central dividing- Wall secured to the front and rear wall of the said casing and extended from the top toward the bottom of the casing to form compartments on opposite sides thereof, a chamber a below it, a bottom plate for one or both of said compartments provided with openings, and a sliding damper to close said openings, a stove located in the chamber a and an exit flue or passage for said heater extended up through the oven, substantially as described.
2. In a portable oven, the combination,witl1 an outer double wall or casing, ofa central dividing-wall to form compartments on opposite sides thereof, bottom plates for said compart-ments, forming below them a chamber, as a a stove in said chamber having stovepipes extended through said compartments, a damper for each of said stove-pipes, one or both of said bottom plates being provided with openings, and a damper to close said openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE XV. IVALKER.
