UNITED STATES PATENT FEicE.
BETTIE BASS, OF IVINDSOR, MISSOURI.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,561, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed October 30, 1889. Serial No. 328,693. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BETTIE BASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Corset, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in corsets; and it consists in certain novel fea tures hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved corset. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view with the hippiece removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view showi n g the manner of securing the hip-piece. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the clasp for securing the steel, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of said clasp as secured upon the end of a steel.
The body A of the corset is constructed of the usual material and in two members or halves, as shown, which are connected at the rear by laces B, and down the front by the ordinary studs and eyes on the front steels. The body is provided in its sides from its upper edge to a point just above the Waistline with the slot or open space 0, and across this space or slot I arrange the elastic bands D, the ends of which are secured to the body of the corset, and these bands serve to keep the corset snugly around the body of the wearer, and at the same time by expanding, when necessary, permit a free action of the lungs. Below these elastic bands D the space C down to the lower edge of the-side is filled with a strong stay M, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
The lower edges of the corset are cutaway just opposite the hips, leaving large semicircular spaces F, which receive the hips, and around the edge of this space I form lacingperforations E. Within these spaces I may insert, when desirable, the removable hi ppieces G, which are provided along their upper edges with perforations II, and through the perforations E H, I interlace the cord I, so as to secure the hip-pieces in place. These removable hip-pieces permit the corset to be adjusted so as to fit large or small hips, and also provide means for making the corsethipless, when desired, by removing them entirely. In that condition the utility of the corset will not be impaired, as the semicircular lower edge around the space F fits snugly over the enlargement of the hips and serves to assist in supporting the corset, and the strong stay M, just. above and at the waistline, will prevent a too great strain falling on the elastic pieces D.
The steels .I are fitted in the body of the corset near the front edges of the same, and their ends are secured in place by the clasps K, The clasps consist of metallic plates having rearwardly-projecting points L on their edges, and they are secured in place by insorting the points through the body of the corset adjacent to the end and side edges of the steel and then doubling the said point-s onto the back of the body of the corset against the back of the steel opposite the body of the plate K, so that they will clasp the inner side of the corset-body and thereby secure the steels in place.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a corset which can be cheaply manufactured and which will be very comfortable to the wearer. The clasps which secure the steels in place effectually prevent them from wearing through the corsetbody, and thus increase the durability of the corset. The elastic straps fitted in the sides of the corset cause the corset to fit snugly around the bust and yet permits a free action of the lungs, while the corset is held snugly and firmly to the waist by the stay M, arranged below the elastic bands; The hippieces can be secured to the corset-body so as to project more or less therefrom, and thus fit a larger or smaller hip by lacing the cord through the proper perforations, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The corset-body A and the steel J, arranged therein, in combination with the metallic clasp K, having rearwardly-projeeting teeth on its edges, said teeth passing closely around the edges of the steel and through the body, and being clasped firmly against the back of both, substantially as described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BETTIE BASS.
