BOTTLE-STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,550, dated April l5, 1890.

Be it known that I, JOHN N. RHOADS, aciti- Zen of the United States, residing at the city and count-y ot' Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being,` had to the accompanying drawings, ot' which- Figure l is a perspective view of the device in use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof, the cork and containing-vessel being shown in dotted outline.

The nature of this invention is a holder of novel construction for bottle and other stoppers; and it consists of a pivoted spring-controlled thumb-lever attached or adapted to be attached to a bottle or other containingvessel, and provided with means for holding a stopper in such position relative to the bottle, dto., that the stopper will normally be forced into the mouth of the latter, yet may be readily withdrawn by depressing the outer `arm of said lever.

The invention consists also in details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully'described and dulyclaimed.

` Referring to the annexed drawings, A represents the containing-vessel, which may be a can,'bottle, or the like. B represents the stopper, being an ordinary cork in the present instance, and C represents .the stopperholder. This holder in its simplest form is constructed as follows: c is a yoke whose limbs are designed to embrace the neck of the vessel and to be detachably secured thereto by means of a thumb-screw c2 or other suitable device. Projecting from this yoke is an arm c3, which is provided with vertical lugs c4, between and in which is pivoted athumblever c", whose forward arm c is provided with a ring,` or band c?, which is adapted to encircle and support a cork B or other stopper, an arm es, which is pivoted at on the lever, resting; upon and holding the cork.

Secured to the under side of the arm c of lever c5 and bearing against the projecting arm c3 is a spring cw, preferably flat, which normally raises the lever-arm ci', and thus presses the cork into the month of the vessel, as clearly shown.

It will be seen that by depressing' the arm c of the lever (arrow l) the cork will be raised from the month ot the bottle (arrow 2) to permit the outpouring of the liquid, duc., therein 5 5 contained, the amount ot' pressure upon said arm determining the extent of elevation of the cork, and of course the outflow of the contents. ly swinging the pivoted arm c3 away from the cork (arrow 3) the latter l may be 6o raised (arrow l) or lowered by hand, as circumstances may require, or may bc entirely removed and reinserted when required.

.Instead of the cork being detachably held within the ring by the arm cs, the cork may be held therein by friction or by means of a set-screw working in the side of the ring, so asto bear against the cork.

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patentl. In a bottle-stopping device, the combination of the pivoted spring-controlled thumblever having the open ring c7, encirclingand holding1 ancrdinary cork, whereby said cork may be withdrawn fro m the bottle by the act of depressing said lever, and whereby the cork may be wholly or partly withdrawn from the rin g and bottle independent of the lever movement, substantially as described.

2. In a bottle-stopping device, the combination ot' the pivoted spring-controlled thumblever having the .ring` c?, holding' an ordinary cork, an d the laterally-swinging' retaining-arm carried by the lever and bearing` upon the top 'of the'cork, substantially as described.

In a bottle-stopping device, the combination of the outwaidly-extending arm c3, its yoke c', the screw connecting the limbs of said yoke, the horizontal thumb-lever pivoted to said arm and provided with the ring holding an ordinary cork, together with the spring interposed between said lever and arm c3, substantially as described.
