MUClLAGE-BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,539, dated April 1, 1890.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LWILLIAM ROBERTS COLE, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in l\[ucilageBottles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a 1n ucilage-bottle of novel construction, and provided with a cup-stopper having a slotted lid or cap for the brush of the bottle to pass in and out of, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims, whereby numerous conveniences are secured, as hereinafter set forth.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,

Figure 1 represents a side view of a mucilage-bottle with its attachments constituting my invention and with the brush in its place in the cup-shaped stopper of the bottle. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same with the brush in full linesa Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, but showing the cup-stopper as constructed with inclined sides instead of straight or parallel ones, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and the bottle as having straight sides instead of sloping ones. Fig. a is a plan of a cup-stopper detached; Fig. 5, a plan of the apertured and slotted lid or cap of the cup-stopper detached, and Fig. 6 a vertical. section of said cap with the brush as in the act of being passed through the same,

A indicates the mucilage bottle proper, which may be made either with sloping or straight sides, as shown in different figures of the drawings.

B indicates the cup-stopper, also made either with straight or sloping sides, as likewise shown in different figures of the drawings, and which is designed to fit mouth-side uppermost into the neck of the bottle A. The bottom of said cup stopperis preferably made to present an upper concave surface, and its body intermediately of its depth. is provided on its exterior with a lip shaped flange Z), which fits over the top of the bottle-neck in a close or air-tight manner. Said cup or cupstopper is further provided on its upper end with an outward projecting flange 0, having slots (1 (Z on opposite sides of it for the pura cap 0 through them for the purpose of holding said cap onto the mouth of the cup-stopper or of removing it therefrom when necessary by turning said cap, so as to bring its lips e 6 either under the unslotted portion of the flange c or in line with the slots (Z (Z, as well understood in such form of fastenings for other purposes.

The cap G, which is circular in shape and preferably made of metal, and which has its locking-lips e e on the under margin of its downwardly-projecting rim that fits over the flange c of the cup-stopper B, is preferably fashioned to present an upper concave surface, and is apertured-=a.s, for instance, at f to permit of the brush D or lower portion thereof passing readily throughit, and has its top further provided with a narrow slot g, or it might be any number of such slots, opening into the aperture f, the use of which will be hereinafter described.

The brush D is provided with a shield 71, that serves to rest on the top of the cap '0, clos ing the same, and acting as a gage to bring the bottom of the brush into contact or contiguity with the bottom of the cup-stopper B.

The bottle A has an external flange i, that is made beveling downward in an outward direction on its under side, while the flange Z) on the cup-stopper A is made beveling upward in an outward direction on its top. This construction of the flanges b and i serves to secure the cup or stopper B to the bottle A by one or more metal clasps 7o bent at their ends, thereby holding them together for transportation.

The whole device forms a cleanly, convenient, and economical one for the use of inucilage in offices or elsewhere. Thus in using it only a small portion of the mucilage in the bottle A, which can be replenished at will, is poured into the cup=stopper B, about sufficient, say, for the days use, any surplus being returned to the bottle at close of the day, so as not to unnecessarily expose the mucilage to the air, and what mucilage is in the cup-stopper at other times is protected from the air by the shield h of the brush shutting down on the apertured cap 0. hen the cupstopper B, partially charged with mucilage, is in its place in the neck of the bottle A, and

the brush down to its place with the bristles enpose of receiving locking-lips e 6, attached to tering the mucilage in the cup-stopper, then to use the brush it is only necessary to drawit out of the cup-stopper and through the aperture in the cap 0 and to pass its bristles through the slot g, the margined sides of which will act as scrapers to detach surplusninucilage that, in the form of drip, will pass back into the cup-stopper. This will prevent the brush from scattering when fully drawn out of the cup-stopper and provide for applying the mucilage, as required, in a more uniform and cleanly manner.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a mucilage-bottle consisting in the main reservoir A, a cup B, closing, the upper end thereof and having an annular external flange inclosing the upper end of said reservoir, fastenings detachably connecting said flange and reservoir, a cap detachably connected With the open end of said cup and having an opening, and a brush-clearer and the brush, substantially as set forth. v

2. In combination with the cup-stopper B, the cap 0, forming a cover thereto and provided with a brush-opening, and brush scraping or clearing slot through it, essentially as described.

3. In a mucilage-bottle, the combination, with the bottle proper A, of the cup-stopper B, the apertured and slotted cap 0, adapted to fit the mouth or upper end of said stopper, and the brush D, provided With a shield h, constructed to form a cover to the apertured and slotted cap, essentially as described.
