Description

NITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. F. GROTE, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED SPRING-MATTRESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent- No. 42,369, dated April 19, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern,.- 4
Be it known that l, JOHN G. F. GROTE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Springiattresses; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to, first, the provision of a bodymattress distinct from the head rest or bolster, and capable of bein g used in either of four positions, so that. as it wears at one part another part may be brought into service; second, a peculiar arrangement of adjustable head-rest third, a provision which serves the double purpose of a base for the bolster and of a removable valise or trunk.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are perspective views of the body mattress, the base, and the bolster, respectively.
My mattress, in its most complete form, consists of three distinct pieces-namely, rst, a rectangular equilateral body-mattress, A, which may have the usual construction of spring-mattresses, except that the springs nearest to the margin are preferred to project some distance beyond and above the margin of the frame, so as to make the crown or upper yielding portion, B, soft at every part; second, A base, C, for the support and proper elevation of the bolster, which base may also be a removable trunk or valise; third, a bolster, D, adapted for vertical adjustment.
The base C may be in the form of a trunk, as represented, and may contain sockets E for the reception of legs F, which projectfrom the bolster frame. The legs F, being perforated at f, receive pinsG to enable the bolster to be set at any desired elevation.
The bolster should contain a row of modcrately stout springs along its most elevated position, flanked by more yielding Ones at each side thereof.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The combination of the equilateral bodymattress A B, base C, bolster D, and legs F f, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as ,and for the purposes specified.
In testimony of which invention Ihercunto set my hand.
J. G; F. GROTE.
