PIANO-STOOL.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,042, dated 4September 19, 1865.

To all whom it may concern..-

Beit known that I, GEORGE A. SHERLOCK, ot the city, county, and State of New York,

have invented new and useful Improvementsin Piano-Forte Stools and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication.

The present invention consists in so arranging the seat of a piano-forte stool upon its body portion that it can be readily adjusted and set at any desired height from the licor, so as to adapt itto the varying heights o'f the persons who use it. rlhe manner in which l accomplish this result is represented in the accompanying plate ot' drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a piano-forte stool; Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line :v x, Fig. 1.

To the center ot' this base a the body c of the stool is secured in any proper manner, by means ofglue, cement, or otherwise, in an upright position, and made either of a square, round, or other' suitable shape, and ornamented, in connection with the base and legs, in any desired style ot' inish. This body portion c ofthe stool is made hollow, and has inserted in and attached to and upon its interior two similar rack-bars, el d, placed at points diametrically opposite to each other, with the notches f of which two catches, g g, turning upon fulcrum-pins a', hun g by theirinner ends upon a common central rod, h, of the follower or shaft Z ofthe seat m, engage, as plainly represented in the drawings. by a guard, r, of the seat, made of the proper shape to allow the jlingers to readily grasp its thumb-piece, while at the same time when a person is sitting on the stool it cannot be in the least degree affected thereby, the seat being upholstered in any of the ordinary styles and modes.

When desired to raise or lower the seat, first depress the rod by bearing down upon its thumb-piece, which consequently causes the catches to be withdrawn from the rack-bars of the body, thus leaving the seat free to be raised orlowered, as may be desired, and to any height whatsoever, by grasping the guard with the remaining ngers of the hand, and when at the proper height the catches are caused to again interlock with the rack-bars by means of the spiral spring S wound around the rod in the proper manner to so operate the same, the hand first, however, having been removed from the thumb-piece.

From the above description lit is obvious that the seat can be readily raised or lowered, according as may be desired, and in a quick and expeditious manner, without the tedious operation of being obliged to turn the seat by means of a screw-shaft, as has heretofore been the case, the disadvantages ot' which have been long known and experienced.

l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Arranging the seat of a piano-forte stool upon its body in substantially the manner described and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the above, the use of the guards 1' r, for the purpose explained.
