TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:l
Be it known that I, GEORGE KNELL, of Moorestown, urlington county, New Jersey, have invented a. Combined Choir and Lounge; and I do hereby declare the following to be o full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My' invention consists of a, combined cha-ir und lounge, composed oi' frames hinged together, and rendered adjustcblen the manner describedhereniter, and oi' n strap, or its equivalent, for regulating the angle of the said frames in respect to cach other.
In order-*to enable others to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction Iend operation, reference being had to the accompany-ing drawing, which forms' a. port of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a. sectional view, showing my invention os'it appears when in use es n lounge.
Figure 2, the same, showing the position to which the several pnrts are adjusted when in use as a chair.
Figure 3 is :tn inverted plan view, and
Figure 4c. detached perspective view. y
v A is a fram-e, consisting of two side-pieces, a and a', of the curved shape shown in the drawing, and connected together-by cross-pieces, b, c, o2, and and byc. board, `]",'the letter, and the space intervening between it and the cross-piece c, beingcov'ered by n suitable cushion or covering-material, x. y
Within and near to one end ofthe frame A, and hinged to the latter by suitable bolts or pins, r/, is c. shorter frame, B, which also consists .of curved side-pieces, 7L, connected together by cross-pieces, z', il, und i2, The cross-piece iis of the curved shape shown, and forms the upper portion of the pillow of the lounge in iig. I, and the outer portion oi' the sent of thechair when turned to the position shown in iig. 2. It is cushioned or covered by a-ny suitable material, y, which also extends to the crosspiecel1 of the frame; and at the under side of the latter is an eye, j, to which is suspended a. rod, 76,'for e purpose described hereafter.
To the inner side, und nearto one end of each of the side-pieces, a and a, ofthe frame A, is hinged e leg, Z, encl leg being connected to the lower end of one of the side-pieces h ot the frame B by u. rod, m.
Avstrap, q, provided with a. suitable buckle, is secured to the cross-piece cZ of the frame A, and passes around c rod, p, which connects the legs Z together, the latter being thus retained .et any ongle with respect to the said frame, es will be more fully described hercafter.
4A freine, C, is arranged to slide in grooves, 1, formcdin' each of the sidespieces, a and a., of the frame A, and is prevented from being entirely withdrawn from the said grooves by u stop -oi lug, s, near its inner end, which strikes the cross-piece e, as shown in iig. I.
Tho lounge, shown in iig. l, rests upon the legs Z, and upon one end ot' each of the side-pieces L of the freine I3, the i'ruinc C being drawn out, os shown, so as to suflciently lengthen the body ot'the lounge, while the rod cprcvents the lutter from being tilted by any weight placed upon the pillow.
The-inclination ofthe feet l und frame B, and, consequently, the height of the body ofthe lounge, may be regula-ted by shortening or lengthening the strap g, ns clearly shown in iig. I.
In adjusting the severnlpzirts to such n position es to form a. chair, thc lounge is raised ond turned upon that portion of the frame B upon which it rests until one end of the freine A also rests upon the ground, as shown in lig. 2. When thus turned,^ thc.t portion of the frame B which formed the pillow of the'lounge becomes the seat oi'rthe chair, while the buck oi' the chair is that portion of the lrnnie A which previously formed the body of the lounge.
The rods m and legs Z are adjusted to a proper position behind the boel: of the chair by shortening the strap q, ond the sliding frame C is pushed inwards, as shown.
The inclination ofthe back and seat ofthe choir can be regulated, ss desired, by lengthening or shorteningthe strap g, and thus moving the outer ends of the legs Z from or towards the frame A, as shown invig. 2.
A supplementary curved freine, I), huving sides, t t, as shown in the perspective view, fig. 4, is adapted to and arranged to slip over the pillow of the lounge or seat of the clniir, so es to widen and lengthen the same;
and the scid frame may be secured, when so adjusted, by menus of set-screws passing through the side-pieces t.
I claim as my inventionfnd desire to secure by Letters Potentl. The frames A and B, in combination with the legs Z, the wliole being arranged for'adjus'tment, substantially as described.
2. The combination ofthe above and a' strap, g, or its equivalent, for the purpose of regulating the inclinad tion of the several parts, as described.
3. The frame D, adapted to 'the frame B, and adjustable thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
4. The combination of the frame B and a sliding:r frame, C, substantially as and for the purpose described 'In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to'tllis specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
GEO. KNELL.
