UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON B. SIMON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAP FOR CRUETS OR OTHER VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,639, dated March 18, 1890.
' Application filed February 12, 1889. Serial No. 299,584. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON B. SIMON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved (lap for Oruets or other Similar Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in caps for cruets or other vessels, and has for its object to provide a means whereby the mouth of the cruet or similar vessel may be uncovered without removing the cap and quickly and expeditiously closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide caps of simple and durable construction which, if desired, may be firmly attached to the vessel, and the said vessel be either filled or emptied without removing the said cap.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 1n which similar figures of reference indicate correspondng parts in all the views. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cruet hav- 1ng my improved cap applied. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections through a cap in opposite directions, the coverplate being illustrated as closed in Fig. 2 and open in Fig. 3. Fig. dis a horizontal section on line y y of Fig. 2.
The cap consists of a hollow, preferably cylindrical, body 10, open at top and bottom, which body may be attached to the neck of the vessel by means of a screw-thread, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, or in any other suitable or approved manner. Across the top of the body 10, preferably at the center, a round bar or rod 11 is secured, and upon said rod a cover-plate 12 is held to slide. The cover-plate 12 may, if found desirable,be provided with a series of perforations 13, or with a spraying-nozzle or equivalent device. The cover-plate is held to slide upon the body 10 through the medium of a guide-plate 14C, rigldly secured to the under side at the center, which guide-plate is provided upon the under side with an undercut groove. When the bar or rod 11 attached to the body is oylmdrical, the groove is circular, showing in cross-section more than a semicircle, as illus trated in Fig. 2, whereupon, when the bar or rod 11 is entered in the groove of the guideplate, the said plate, while being free to slide thereon, is prevented from becoming detached therefrom. I desire it, however, to be distinctly understood that the groove in the guide-plate may be formed otherwise than shown. For instance, instead of a circular groove, a dovetail groove may be employed, in which event the body-bar 11 is similarly shaped. I
Ordinarily the cover-plate is provided with adownwardly-extending peripheral flange 15, and the movement of the plate upon the body is limited by means of two pins 16, integral with the under surface near one edge, one pin being located upon each side of the grooved guide-plate, preferably in such manner that the pin upon one side of the said plate will be in advance of the pin upon the opposite side. The pin 16 nearest the center is adapted to engage with the upper inner edge of the body when the cover plate is slid outward, as shown in Fig. 3, to define the said outward movement. The other pin, being close to the periphery, engages with the opposite inner wall of the body when the cover plate is brought to a closed position, preventing the flange of the cover-plate from passing outside of the outer surface of the body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire toseoure by Letters Patent- A cap for cruets or like vessels, consisting in the attaching ring or body having a transverse round bar 11 across its upper edge and a cover-plate 12, provided with a circular flange registering with the upper edge of the ring or body, atransverse guide-plate 14, extending across the under side of the coverplate and provided with a longitudinal groove in cross-section more than a semicircle, receiving within it the said round bar, and the two depending stop-pins 16, one in advance of the other at opposite sides of the said guide and extending at their lower ends be low the meeting edges of the cover-plate and body, substantially as set forth.
