BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 419,970, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed March 6, 1889. Serial No. 302,108. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. PAUL, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates toan improvement in butt0n-fasteners, and in particular to that class of fasteners which are employed to fasten ordinary shoe or other eyelet buttons.

The object is to provide a fastener which may be cut or punched from a small piece of metal at a slight cost and without waste of material, and, further, to provide a fastener which may be easily and quickly placed on the button without requiring any extraordinary skill, and one which will. have none of its parts projecting out to injure the hose of the wearer or to hurt the feet.

WVith these ends in view my invention consists in a small disk of metal having a T or anchor shaped tongue out or punched therefrom and bent ready for immediate attachment to a button.

It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. a i

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through a piece of leather, a button, and through the fastener in its position as attached to a button.

A represents a thin disk cut, punched, or stamped from sheet metal. This disk need not necessarily be round, though this shape is preferred, as it requires less material and is in other respects better adapted for the purpose. A tongue I) is cut or punched out of this disk as near the center as possible, one end being left integral with the disk and the other end a being by preference anchor-shaped and bent outward, as shown. The free end 0 is rounded, giving the projection d d a kind of hook or anchor shape to furnish the tongue with all the facilities for speedy application and sure retention against accidental displacement. By rounding the end, as explained, the tongue is not liable to catch in the lining of the shoe when inserted in the eyelet or shank of a button,.thus to make its adjustment a difficult and tedious operation; but, on the contrary, when formed as shown and bent up through the middle e back of the projections d d, where the shank of the button rests, it is simply necessary to insert the shank of the button through a hole formed in the shoe-upper, and to then turn the disk up endwise, with the end a of the tongue extending longitudinally of the shank and at right angles thereto. Then by hooking one projection cZ into the shank and then the other and turning the disk so that the fiat face falls outward the operation is completed. By the reverse of this operation the fastener may of course be as easily removed without the slightest injury to it, so that it may be used a number of times with the exercise of a little care.

The beauty of the fastener is that it is complete and requires no bending or other manipulation other than that described, and when applied to the button all the strain is upon the middle of the tongue, the projections at (Z merely serving to prevent the fastener from slipping out of the shank or eyelet; also, as has already been mentioned, when on the button a perfectly fiat surface remains outside, so that the wearing of ashoe with these fasteners is attended with no inconvenience whatever. I

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
