IMPROVED WASH-STAND.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,986, dated March 22, y1864.

To all whom, t may concern:

vBe it known that I, ZEBINA E. FoBEs, of Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of vNew York, have invented a new and Improved Wash-Stand; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Y Figure l is a perspective view of my improved washstand. tudinal central section through the wash-stand. rIhe object of iny invention is to supply, to some extent, a deficiency in dwelling-houses and other places which are not furnished with the conveniences of water from street-mains, by providing` a portable wash-stand with serviceand waste-water tanks, the former for containing hot and cold water and the latter for receiving the water which is allowed to escape from the basin, as will be hereinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

The body A of the wash-stand may be constructed of any required size, shape, or niaterial, and ornamented with panels or other work. This portion of the wash-stand is divided by a horizontal shelf or partition, a, (shown inV Figs. 2 and 3,) beneath which are two removable waste-water tanks, D D', furnished with ring-handles, by means of which they can be drawn out and emptied. Above the partition a, is the. basin B, which may be made of metal, chinaware, or.other suitable material, and secured beneath the 'opening through the top ofthe stand, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3.

The basin B is furnished with an overflowpipe, b, leading down into one or the other of the tanks, D D. The basin B is also furnished with waste-water pipes c c, which communicate with a central discharge-opening, c', closed when desired by a plug, c2, Fig. 1. The pipes c c conduct the waste-water into the Fig. 2 is a vertical longi removable tanks D D and a single two-way cock, d, may be used, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for allowing the waste water from the basin to flow into either one or both of the tanks, D D', as may be desired.

On the top of the wash-stand above described and near the back part thereof, is abox or chest, C, having a hinged cover, e. This chest extends entirely across the washstand from one side to the other, and it is divided into two water-compartments, E E', by the double walls or partitions f j, which latter form or inclose a chamber, g. The walls fextend up from the bottom of the chest but a short distance and form supports for the elevated tank h, which, like the other tanks, should be suitably lined and adapted for holding water. This small tank h extends up to the bottom of the hinged cover and is provided with snitable means for keeping it in its place upon the supports f, and for allowing it to be removed for cleaning or other purposes.

The partitions or walls ff inclose a large pipe, k, having small branch pipes 'n a a2 leading from its circumference and communicating with their respective tanks E E and h, as shown in Fig. 3. The large pipe 7c is subdivided by a central partition, i, and a horizontal partition, fi', forming three passages distinct from each other-t'. e., no one of these passages communicates with any other than its own respective tank. The three-chambered pipe It receives on that end which passes through the side-of chest C the tailstock ol' a three-Way cock. (Represented clearly in Figs. 4 and 5.) The passages in thetailstock G ot' the cock correspond with those in pipe k, so that by the application to this tube or tail-stock of a three-way cock, about to be described, water may be drawn from either one of the three tanks in chest U. The cock proper consits of a cylinder, m, to which the pipe G is secured. Within this cylinder m, which has a closed bottom and a dischargenozzle, p, on its side, works a cylinder, s, which is closed at its bottom and top, but provided With openings t through its sides. There are three openings, t, arranged or disposed so as to register with their respective passages through the tail stock by turning the cylinder s in certain positions 5 and there are also three openings, t, corresponding to the openings t which I have above described, that discharge through the nozzle p. When it is desired to draw water from `the tank h, the cylinder s is turned, by means of the handle fw, so as to bring the highest receiving opening t opposite the passage in tailstock Gr. An opening corre sponding to this receivingopening will be bought opposite the nozzle-hole and the water will How through the cock. The other openings, t, are brought opposite their respective receiving and discharging openings by turning the cylinders either to the right or to the lei't, and thus Water may be drawn from either one of the tanks E E at pleasure.

If it is desired, separate and independent cocks maybe applied to the three Water tanks, E E It, all leading into the basin B, or the three-way cock above described may be used. From the above description it will be seen that by keeping the service-tanks supplied with water it will always be ready for immediate use, and can be obtained by simply turning the cock or cocks. The chest which is elevated above the basin, although secured to and made to form apart ot' the wash-stand,

will furnish a sufficient head of water forall purposes, and the removable Waste-Water tanks arranged below the basin, and also forming a part of the Wash-stand, Will iezeive all the waste Water from the basin and admit ot its being removed and thrown out, While at the same time these tanks can be used very conveniently for bath tubs. The hinged cover e closes the three tanks E E" h, and the two doors `J J close the front of the Washstand and hide all its fixtures from View.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A portable Wash stand having a basin, B, and provided with one or more elevated service- Water receivers and one or more Waste-Water tanks, and with cocks for controlling the supply and escape of the Water, substantially as described.
