VILLIAM HUMPHREY, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-STANDS FOR FACTORIES, 86C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 206,454, dated July 30, 1878; application tiled July 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WxLLIAM HUMPHREY, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michi gan h ave invented anew and Improved NVash-Stand for Factories, &c., of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side eleva-tion of my improved washstand for factories, prisons, &c.; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line m a', Fig. l.
Similar lettersl of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to an improved washstand or lavatory for factories, prisons, &c., by which a large number of wash-basins are conveniently arranged for use and all iilled and discharged at the same time, so that a large number of persons can wash themselves at the same time, the lavatory requiring` but little work for supplying the basins or drawing off the water.
The invention consists of a number of washbasins that are supplied by a common feedpipe, in connection with an overflow-pipe and discharge valve and pipe.
Referring to the drawing, A A represent wash-basins of suitable size and material, that are supported by connecting-pipes either in one row, vertically above a common horizontal main pipe, I3, or in two rows, one at each side of the feed-pipe. lhen the main pipe B is lled by turning on the cock of the supplypipe a at one end of the main pipe, the basins are all filled at the saine time up to a level with the discharge-orifice b of an overflowpipe, C, that is arranged in a hollow vertical discharge-tube, D, which is connected with the opposite end of the main pipe B. The
overliow-oriee is at the upper end of the pipe C, the lower end being provided with a valve, d, that fits on an interior seat, d', of the vertical tube D.
The overflow -pipe forms the stem of the valve d, and is connected by a rod, c, with a handle or knob, f, by which the valve may be lifted out of its seat, and thereby the discharge-pipe opened. During the use of the basins the water is discharged through the overflow, and, when the discharge-valve is opened, drawn off at the saine time from all the basins.
In place of the filling and emptying arrange ment any other valve and overiiow mechanism may be used, as the essential feature of my invention consists in the disposition. of the basins on a main pipe, which serves both for the lling and discharging of the basins in connection with an overfiow and discharge valve.
The double row of basins may be used to better advantage in shops and factories, while a single row of basins along the wall is better ada-pted for prison-cells and prison-cell houses.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A wash-stand for factories, prisons, Src., consisting of a number of wash-basins supported on a horizontal main pipe, in connection with a water-supply pipe, overflow, and valved discharge-pipe, substantially as set forth.
'\VILLIAM HUMPHREY.
