ALLEN GEORGE SMITH, OF COLUMBUS, ONTARIO, CANADA.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,226, dated January 14, 1890.
Application filed June 3, 1889- Serial No. 313,025. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN GEORGE SMITH, yoeman, a citizen of Canada, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Ontario, in the Province of Ontario, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIernial Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat, simple, and effective truss, one which can easily be adjusted Without unnecessary pressu re to suit all forms of hernia, and which from its simplicity gives entire freedom of movement and comfort to the wearer Without danger of displacement; and my invention consists, essentially, of forming my truss of one continuous rod or wire curved to fit the body and bent at the back into the form of a loop or ring, which may be covered with chamois or any other suitable material, and at the front end coiled into a rigid open spiral, thus forming an open frictionless pad of any preferred shape. To hold the truss in place, I attach to the curved rod or wire, above the rear pad or loop, a web or partial belt, which passes around the body to the front pad and is there held by a loop passing over a button on the front pad.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved truss, showing it ready to be applied to the body. Fig. 2 is a detail view of my improved front pad. Fig. 3 is a detail View of rear pad. Fig. 4 is a view showing my truss applied to the body.
Similar letters refer to similarparts throughout the specification and drawings.
A is my improved truss, consisting of a U- shaped continuous rod or Wire a, curved to fit the body, as at CL, and coiled at the front end into a rigid open spiral O, of any preferred shape, which forms an open frictionless pad to fit the rupture, and bent at the back into the form of a loop E, which may be covered with chamois or any other suitable material.
To the rod or wire a, above the rear pad or loop E, is attached a Web or partial belt B, which passes around the body of the wearer and is attached to a button F, formed on the end of the Wire turned outward through the center of the pad C. When the truss is adjusted, the front pad O is applied to the rupture, the bow or curved portion (it rises nearly upright, and, passing overthe point of the hip below the lower rib, terminates in the rear pad or loop E, which presses into the soft muscles of the hip and affords a bearing, thus securing perfectly the rear end of the truss.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A truss consisting of a continuous rod or wire curved to fit the body and coiled at the front end into a rigid open spiral to form the pad, and bent at the back end into the form of a loop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A truss-pad made inone continuous piece with the bow by coiling the wire into suitablyshaped spirals, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the front pad 0, the bow at, the rear loop E, the web or partial belt 13, and the button F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto affixed my sig nature.
ALLEN GEORGE SMITH.
