HOOD FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. CULMAN, .I r., of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insect-Hoods for Electric Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the aecon'ipanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

rlhis invention relates to certain improvements in insect-hoods for lamps, more particularly electric lamps; and it consists of the combination of parts, including their construction, substantially as will be set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lamp-protector as applied for use, the same also being shown in dotted lines in its open position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my protector detached from the lamp.

In carrying out my invention I employ a screen or cage, preferably cylindrical in its general contour, slightly tapering upward, which consists of two longitudinal sections B B. These sections comprise a metallic frame d o, to which is applied wire cloth or netting of the required mesh to exclude from the light or flame flying insects. The sections B B are hinged at their upper ends, as at D, to opposite sides of a ring or band O, formed also in two parts provided with connectingflanges c c, bolted together by nutted bolts d d, and whereby the band or ring is securely clamped to the lamp, as shown. The sections B B are held together by spring-clasps f', snapping over projections f, applied to said sections, respectively.

E E are sprin frs, with their upper arms or portions secured or letinto sockets D', formed, preferably, upon the upper halves or leaves of the hinges D, the lower portions of said springs bearing against the screen-sections and confined in eyes or loops eof half-bands or rings a of said screen-sections. These springs serve to automatically throw or spring the screen-sections apart and hold them elevated when unclasped at ff', whereby in obtaining access to the lamp for lighting or cleaning it great convenience is promoted, saving the separating and holding of the same by hand. The screen-sections may be made of any other suitable medium-as, for instance, perforated sheet-brass and the like.

This device avoids the congregating around and obscuring the light, especially of electric lamps, by insects, and consequently preventing the falling into and the accumulation in the lamp of the carcasses of those that are destroyed or killed by the heat of the iiame, which thereby also require the oftencr cleaning of the lamp.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism

1. In a hood or screen for lamps, the combination of the perforated screen-sections with a. divided clamping-ring, to which said sections are hinged at their upper ends, substantially as set forth.

2. In a hood or screen for lamps, the screensections covered with netting, spring-hinges for holding said sections normally open, and means for fastening the same in a closed position, in combination with a clamping-ring, substantially as set forth.

3. The bisected screen or protector for lamps, having its sections hinged to opposite sides of a clamping band or ring, a springclasp upon one section catching over a projection upon the other section, and the springs each having one arm entering or fitting in a socket in one leaf of each of the hinges of said sections, the other arms or portions of said springs bearing upon the latter and conned in eyes or staples secured to half-bands applied to said sections, substantially as set forth.
