Be it known that I, CHARLES CARTER, a

citizen of the United States, residing at` Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

A still further obj ect of my invention is to y provide a device which can be easily and quickly set up in position to be used and one which is provided with means for holding the same in position over the persons` head so that it will not be thrown off of the person should the person happen to move while asleep.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which is especially adapted to be used by traveling1 men such as drumn mers and the like so that a person will be able to obtain a good nights sleep without being bothered by flies and mosquitos.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In carrying out my improved invention I employ a base ring A formed of two semicircular sections connected together by hinges B whereby the sections can be folded back upon themselves so as to occupy a small space. Each of the sections is provided with sockets C in which are detachably mounted rods D having pointed upper ends D and provided with annular shoulders DL 1 adjacent the pointed ends over which are the ring A said rods being sprung together and forced within the sockets and the annular shoulders fitting in annular grooves formed in the interior of the sockets so that the pressure of the same will hold the rods in position. These sockets are preferably formed of a tube split longitudinally so as to allow the side portions to spread in order 1 that the shoulder on the end of the rods can This invention relates to portable pro- 1 tectors, more particularly to devices for protecting a person when in bed from mosqui-A tos and fiies, the object being to provide a device which can be folded up and carried in pass between the same into the annular grooves but it is of course understood that any other suitable form of spring sockets can be used if desired. The sockets C are provided with hooks C extending inwardly therefrom to which are connected chains Gr having pins I-I connected to the free ends which are provided with oif-set portion H adapted to prevent the pins from being pulled out after having been forced into place in the bed covering. It will be seen that by this arrangement the frame can be secured over the persons head in the correct position so that all danger of it being moved by the person turning over in bed is prevented.

A circular piece of mosquito netting I is used in connection with the frame and is provided with a piece of tape for securing it to the base of the frame and the lower edge of the mosquito netting is provided with a hem in which is secured a little chain so as to hold the netting in position after it has been placed over the persons head and it will be seen that after it has once been placed over the persons head it will be held in position by the weight of the chain so as to prevent mosquitos or iies from crawling under the edges. w

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a protector which will prevent flies and mosquitos from reaching a persons head when asleep and one which can be folded into a very small space as the rods can be easily and quickly de tached from the sockets by first forcing the same together and removing the upper ring. The rods are then drawn upwardly so as to detach them from the lower sockets and by folding the base ring back upon itself it will be seen that it can be readily placed within a suit case or ordinary satchel.

lWhat I claim is l. A device of the kind described comprising two rings spaced apart by detachable rods one of said rings being formed of `two sections hinged together, netting arranged over said rings and connected thereto and means for fastening said device to the bed covering.

2. A device of the kind described comprising a base ring provided with sockets, rods arranged in said sockets, a supporting ring provided with spring sockets arranged at the upper end of said rods, a mosquito netting arranged over said ring having a weighted lower edge and chains carrying pins for securing said device over the per-- sons head.

3. In a device of the kind described the combination with a base ring frame formed of two semi-circular sections connected together by hinges, rods carried by said frame, a ring provided with spring sockets arranged over the upper end of said rods and a circular piece of mosquito netting arranged over said rings provided with a weighted lower edge.

4. In a device of the kind described the combination with a base ring formed of two sections pivotally connected together, sockets provided with hooks carried by said ring, rods arranged in said sockets provided with annular grooves arranged over said rods, chains carried by said hooks provided with pins having off-set portions and a piece of mosquito netting arranged over said ring and connected thereto.

5. A device of the kind described conn prising a sectional ring provided with sockets and a solid ring provided with spring sockets, rods arranged in said sockets connecting said rings, a circular piece of mosquito netting arranged over said rings and means for fastening said rings to the bed covering.

6. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base ring formed of two sections pivotally connected together, sockets carried by said ring provided with hooks, rods mounted in said sockets provided with annular shoulders and reduced upper ends, a supporting ring provided with a plurality of sockets corresponding in number of the rods adapted to be arranged over the upper ends of said rods and rest on shoulders, a circular piece of mosquito netting arranged over said rings and connected thereto and chains carrying pins for securing said ring over the head of a person.
