RAYMOND T. STARR, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 418,540, dated December 31, 1889. l
Application filed October 16,1889. Serial No. 327,159. (No model.)
I To all atoms may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND T. STARR, of Bloomington, in the county of -Mc Lean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in hinges, the object of the'same being to provide a hinge which will be invisible when placed in position, so that the lid or top will present a smooth and even surface.
- A further object is to provide a hinge of the above character which will be simple and economical in construction and durable and efiicient in use; and with these ends in view my invention. consists in certain features of the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fiilly described, and
. pointed out in the claim.
, In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1' is a plan'view of the hinge, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig.3 is a perspective view of thetwo parts of the hinge.
The fiat metal bar A is secured to the lower stationary part bf the article to which the hinge is applied, and is provided with the elbow B, formed by curving upward at the free end of said ,bar at an angle of about fortyfive degrees. The edges 0 and D of the lid and fixed portion of'the article are formedat oblique angles with each other. The casing E is pivotally secured to the ends of the elbow B, the free edges of the casing-arms F being inclined, as shown at G, thereby enabling them to rest flush with the edges D of the lower or stationary part. The upper portion of the lid G is provided with the groove H, the lower portion of which is extended slightly farther than the upper portion thereof, the rear face of said groove being incline'd at a suitable angle to join the two sections at a slight angle. The casing E is adapted to fit within said groove H, and iscut away, as shown at I, in the direction of the pivot K. The bar A is fitted to a beveled cut or mortise formedon the stationary portiou of the device.
The hinge may be constructed of any suitable material, and when in use is altogether invisible, which renders the same of great value when applied to pianos, organs, and desks. I I
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hinge, the combination, with the flat bar A and the elbow B, adapted to be secured to the stationary portion of a piano or other article, of a casing E, having the arms F, the said arms being inclined, as shown at G, and cut away, as shown at I, and the lid having a beveled mortise to receive said casing E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence ing witnesses.
RAYMOND T. STARR.
