FISHING ROD HOLDER.
No. 417,997. Patented Dec. 24, 1889.
UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
. sIMEoNDUPUIs, or NATICK, MASSACHUSETTS.
FISHING-ROD HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,997, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed September 16, 1389. Serial No. 824,055. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON DUPUIS, of Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rod Holders, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to devices for application to a boat or other support to hold a fishing-rod in position while the hook is in the Water, and to permit the quick upward movement of the pole by one hand.
The invention consists in a clamp constructed to be applied in one position to the seatof a boat and in another position to the gunwale thereof, a standard detachably secured to said clamp, (the latter being constructed to hold the standard vertically in either of its pos tions and to permit the vertical adjustment of the standard) and a yoke pivoted to the upper end of the standard and provided with two rests for the fishing-rod, one of said rests being open at the bottom and constituting a top support for the rod, while the other is open at the top and constitutes a bottom support for the rod.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved rod-holder attached to the gunwale of a boat. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same attached to the seat of a boat. Fig. 3 represents a sec tion on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4-. represents a perspective view of the clamp.
The same letters and figures of reference indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the yoke, which is composed of two arms 2 2, formed on a hub 4, which is pivoted on a stud 5, formed 011 the supporting-standard b. Said hub is clamped against a seat on said standard by a thumb-nut d 011 the stud 5. The yoke can be set at any desired inclination by means of said nut. One arm of the yoke is provided with a rest 7, which is open at the top, and constitutes a support for the under side of a fishing-rod r, placed in said rest. The other arm is provided with a rest 8, which is open at the bottom and is formed to extend across the upper side of the fishing-rodr and to cooperate with the rest 7 in supporting the rod either horizontally or at any desired angle, according to the position of the yoke a. The rod can be grasped at a point between the rests and swung upwardly at its outer end, the rest 8 serving as a fulcrum holding down the inner end of the rod.
3 represents the clamp, which is adapted to be attached to a boat and to support the standard I). Said clamp is composed of the rectangular portion or arm 9, the angular arm 10, formed therewith, and the clampingscrew 12, engaged with a socket in the angular arm and adapted to co-operate with one side of the rectangular portion 9 in grasping either the gu nwale g of a boat, as shown in Fig. 1, or a seat h, as shown in Fig. 2. The standard Z2 is inserted in orifices formed in the clamp, there being a series of orifices 0 0, arranged to receive the standard when the clamp is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and another series of orifices o 0 0', arranged to receive the standard when the clamp is in the position shown in Fig. 2. The standard is secured to the clamp by a set-screw o in one of said positions, and by a set-screw '0 in the other position.
It will be seen that the clamp constructed as described permits the yoke and standard to be secured to either the gunwale or to one of the seats of a boat, and to be raised or lowered, so that the pole can be held at any desired height.
I am aware that the pivoted yoke, having rod rests arranged as here shown, is not new, and I do not therefore claim the same per so.
I claim- In a rod-holding attachment, the clamp s, composed of the rectangular arm 9, having the orifices o o in two of its opposite sides, and orifices o 0 in the other two sides, the bent arm 10, formed on said rectangular arm and provided with another orifice 0', the clamping-screw 12, working in the arm 10 and arranged to co-operate with one side of the rectangular arm 9, the standard-holding screws o o, engaged, respectively, with the arm 9 and the bent arm 10, combined with the standard I) and the rod-supporting yoke on said standard, the arrangement being such that the standard may be held by the orifices two subscribing witnesses,this 5th day of Sep- 0 0 and screw 1) when the clamp is in one potember, A. D. 1889. sition, and by the orifices 0 0 and screw 1;
when the clamp is in another position, as set- SIMEON DUPUIS' 5 forth. WVitnesses:
In testimony whereof I have signed my A. D. HARRISON, name to this specification, in the presence of ARTHUR W. CRossLEY.
