IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,792, dated March 1, 1864.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM STARKEY, of Bridgeport, Gloucester county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Cap for Lamp- Ghimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists of a metal cap, conr posed of an inner and outer casing adapted to each other, and arranged, in respect to the glass portion of the chimney, substantially as described hereinafter, so that the cap may be readily handled without fear of burning the fingers, and so that an ordinary paper shade may be attached to the cap without danger of the former being scorched, the glass portion of the chimneybeing at the same time maintained in a comparatively cool state.

In order to enable others to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction.

On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved cap for lamp-chimneys; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 a detached view of part of the cap.

A represents the glass portion of the lampchimney, which is provided below with the usual flange, a, for attachment to the burner of the lamp, and above with a flange, I), to which is connected the outer casing, O, of the metal cap, D being the inner casing of the same.

In the present instance the outer and inner casings are connected together by forming on the inside of the upper edge of the casing 0 three projections, e, which take their places in indentations formed in the inner casin g, D. Each of these indentations may be formed in the manner best observed on reference to Fig. 3, part of each indentation being vertical and part horizontal, so that in adapting the outer to the inner casing the projections 0 may be first moved down the vertical portions of the in dentations f, and then by turning either of the casings the projections may take their places in the horizontal portions of the indentations.

The inner and outer casings are thus locked together, but in such a manner that they can be readily detached from each other when they have to be cleaned. The lower edge of the inner casing,D,should project below the upper edge of the glass portion of the chimney, and should be near to the interior of the latter, but not in contact therewith.

The outer casing, C, may be fitted to the flange b of the glass portion of the chimney in various ways. The plan shown in the drawings, however, is the most suitable, and has been found effective in practice.

The lower edge of the casing C is made somewhat smaller in diameter than the flange b, so that when the former is pressed over the latter it will yield slightly, and then recoil and clasp the chimney tightly.

As the casing D is in contact with the easing G at the three points only where the projections 0 enter the indentations f, it will be evident that but little of the heat imparted to the inner casing, D, by the flame can be communicated to the exterior casing, G, and consequently that the glass portion of the chimney must be maintained in a comparatively cool state, and free from danger of breaking.

Another advantage of my invention is that the cap can be handled without danger of burning the fingers, and a third advantage is the opportunity of attaching to the outer casing an ordinary paper shade without danger of burning or scorching the same.

Without confining myself to any specific form of the glass portion A of the chimney, or of the metal cap for the same, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metal cap composed of the outer casing, O, and inner casing, D, adapted to each other, and arranged in respect to the glass portion A of the chimney, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
