Description

HOBBIS & McNAlR.
Lamp Burner.
Patented March 1, 1864.
N. PiTERS. Phnhr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. HOBBIS, OF NEWARK, AND ALEXANDER MGNAIR, OF BLOOMFIELD, N. J.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,774, dated March 1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD HoBBIs, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New'Jersey, and ALEXANDER MOHAIR, of Bloomfield, in the same county and State, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners ;-and we do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a lamp-burner with our improvement applied to it; Fig. 2, a detached and enlarged vertical section of the improvement, taken in the line mac, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in applying a tube to a lamp-burner at the outer side thereof, and having the upper end of said tube provided with a cap or cover, all arranged in such a manner that the lamp may be supplied with oil without unscrewing the burner from time admitting of the top of the tube being,
very readily exposed to receive the nozzle of a lamp-filler, and also readily closed when the lamp is filled.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a lamp-burner, which we prefor to have of the kind provided with a hinged top, in order that the wick-tube may be exposed, to light and trim the wick without detaching the chimney from the burner.
B represents a tube, which is placed ver tically at the side of the burner, and has its lower end curved, so as to pass horizontally, or nearly so, into the lower part of the burner just above the screw a, which screws into the top of the lamp 0, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
'lhe diameter of the tube B at its upper end is designed to be sufficiently large to admit of the insertion of the nozzle of a lampfiller, and said tube is provided with a cap or cover formed of a band, I), having a horizontal semicircular plate, a, secured to its upper edge. The upper end of the tube B also has a semicircular plate, 62, attached to its upper end, and the band I) has a pin, 6, passing horizontally through it into a slot, f, made in the tube B near its upper end, said pin projecting out from the band I) sufficiently far to admit of its being pressed against by the thumb or finger to turn the band I) and important, for the reason that no parts of the same require to be detached, and consequently not. liable to be lost or mislaid, and, as the band I) and plate 0 are simply turned in a horizontal plane in order to open and close the tube B, the latter may extend up quite near to the flange 61*, which supports the chimney, and in close contact with the burner, a result which could not be attained with an ordinary stopper or screw on account of the latter requiring to be adjusted vertically in the tube.
By having the tube-B extend up quite close to the flange (1* the oil in the fountain U is not liable to be brought in contact with the cover of the tube in case the lamp should be tilted to one side, and hence there will be no leakage of oil from the tube, a contingency sure to occur with a short I tube when the fountain O is full or nearly full of oil.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tube placed at or attached to the exte-.
rior of the lamb-burner, in connection with a horizontal rotating or slide stopper or cover.
