F. ALTHEIDE.
COLLAR PAD.
Patented Nov. 19. 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRITZ ALTI'IEIDE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COLLAR-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,316, dated November 19, 1889.
Application iiled August l2, 1889. Serial No. 320,443. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, FRITZ ALTHEIDE, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new Improvements in Collar-Pads, of which the tollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices intended to be attached t-o a hamecollar and to rest upon the neck of the horse as a protection for galled places caused by the pressure and rubbing of the collar; and it consists, generally, in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement attached to the collar. Figs. i and 3 are respectivelycross and longitudinal sections of the same.
In the drawings, i represents the collar; 3, the strap connecting the two parts of the collar together at the top, and which is passed through the loop or eye 5 of the collar-pad, thus holding it in position, as desired, upon the neck of the animal. The pad itself is preferably formed of abod y 6, of thick felt or other similar material, adapted to rest directly upon the neck of the animal, and having an upper covering 7, preferably of leather. The central portion of the felt and its covering is cut out elliptically7 forming anopening 8. This opening I prefer to cover by means of a semi-ellipsoidal cap or cover 9, formed preferably of leather, which serves as a covering and protection for the wounded part. In order to hold this cap in its proper arched form, I prefer to secure to it upon its upper surface a metallic cross-shaped strip 10, which is given the proper curvature and rigidly secured to the cap and to the pad. The loop 5 is preferably secured to this metallic strip by means of screws entering threaded holes in the strip, the loop being capable of longitudinal adjustment upon the strip 10 by providing a series of such holes to receive the screws, whereby the pad can be adjusted along the neck of the animal in different positions to cover and protect a wounded spot at any point upon the top of the neck of the animal.
In order to furnish suitable ventilation and to keep the parts as cool as possible, I prefer to arrange perforations 1l through the cap 9.
The value ot' my improved pad consists in providing a thick soft absorbent cushion to bear upon the sound flesh around the Wounded part and receive all of the pressure and load of the collar and its attachments, and to be adjustable longitudinally of the neck of the animal to cover any spot underneath the collar7 the sore or wounded part being covered and protected as well as properly ventilated by means of the opening 8 and its perforated cap.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the pad-body formed of thick felt and having an opening in its top and provided with a leather covering and with straps adapted to secure it to a suitable collar, of the arched cap extending over the opening in said pad-body, a metal strip eX- tending over said cap, and an adjustable loop secured upon said strip and adapted to receive the collar-strap, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1889.
FRITZ ALTI'IEIDE.
