IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR PADS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,428, dated May 8, 1877; application filed February 3, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW FOLEY, of Atlantic, in the county of Cass and State 01' Iowa, have invented an Improved Horse- Oollar Pad, of which the following is a speci fication:

The object of my invention is to construct a pad in such a manner that it will have a rigid concave top and back, that cannot come into contact with the animals neck, and that will aid in retaining the flexible and selfadjustin g sides of the pad in proper position to fit animals of various sizes, and at all times admit air to circulate under the pad to ventilate the animals neck, and thereby prevent chafing. It consists in forming a pad of two uniform flexible sides, in such a manner that they will form an acute angle and have a curved and rigid longitudinal and central top rim or back, as hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 of my drawing is a side elevation of my improved pattern and form of pad. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection view through the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a complete pad.

Together they fully illustrate the construction and operation of my invention.

a represents the outside part of one side of my complete pad. It is preferably a piece of good harness-leather; butany suitable flexible material may be substituted for the leather. It has straight sides and a curved or concave top edge. The bottom is scalloped, but may be straight or curved, as desired. b b (shown in Figs. 2 and 3) is a piece of sheep-skin, cloth, or other suitable flexible material, corresponding in size and shape with the part a, secured as a lining on the insides of the pieces a, by stitching them together around their edges, or in any suitable way. They may be padded and cushioned, or hair or other suitable filling may be stuffed between the parts a and b.

When two sides of a pad are thus separately formed they are then joined together at their curved top edges by stitching, riveting, or in any suitable way to form a rigid concave back in the top and center of the pad.

0 is a metal rim, clamped and riveted over the curved top edge of the joined sections, to protect the leather from wear, and to aid in keeping the concave back of the complete pad entirely rigid. d d represent loops, riveted or otherwise secured on the outside of the pad, to connect the pad with the horsecollar and to keep it in proper place.

In the practical operation of my improved pad the respective flexible sides a. b will readily spread apart, or close together, and adjust themselves on the necks of different ani-' and the rigid back of the pad. Ventilation is thus always provided and chafing the animals flesh is thereby prevented.

The concave in the back 0, together with its stiffness, aids in keeping the complete pad in a central position relative to the collar and theharness-hames by keeping their fastenings from slipping from the pad; and the complete pad. by thus keeping all parts in proper place, provides comfort and protection to the animal, prevents chafing, or allows chafed and sore necks to heal.

I am aware that metal pad-trees have been used to preserve a vacant space between the animals neck and the pad. and that two uniform flexible sides of a pad have been formed concave on their top edges to form a concave back. But I claim that my manner of clamping the concave top edges together with a rigid and concave metal binding-plate and back to retain an acute angle between the two flexible sides, and to thereby keep the pad away from the top edge of the animals neck, and provide ventilation for it at all times, and also to form a metal bearing for the collar and hame fastenings, to thereby preserve the leather of the pad from wearing off, is a new and valuable improvement.

I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a-
