WILLIAM L. STANSBERRY, OF AMES, IOWA.
COLLAR-PAID.
To all 'whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. vSTANs- BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Collar-Pad, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a collar pad of simple, dura-ble and ineXpensive construction.
A further object is to provide a collar pad adapted to fit over the upper portion of the neck of a draft animal, and having a strip of material adapted to rest on the horses neck which will not heat the neck, and provided with a strip of absorbent material over the lower strip adapted to absorb moisture from the lower strip, which is preferably leather, and to give off moisture to the air. This collar pad is also provided with an upper strip adapted to take the wear of the buckle by which the collar is fastened and to assist in holding the various parts of the pad in their proper relative positions.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a rear elevation of a collar equipped with a pad embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation of the pad. Fig. 3 shows a detail, sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 shows a side elevation of the pad.
In the form of my invention exemplified in the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to Vindicate generally a horses collar of ordinary construction open at its upper end and having its upper ends adapted to be secured together by means of a buckle 11 and a coacting strap 12.
For fitting underneath the upper ends of the collar 10 and resting on the upper portion of the neck of the animal for furnishing a smooth and comfortable support for the collar, I `have provided my improved pad," which comprises a lower piece 13 preferably of leather, designed to extend across the top of the horses neck and to be curved from its center downwardly to its ends to t the horses neck.
Resting upon the leather strip 13 is a pad Specification of Letters Patent.

of felt or other `suitable absorbent material, adapted to take moisture from the leather pad 13 and give it off into the air. Secured to the upper surface of the pad 14 near its ends, arc straps 15 to be fastened to the upper ends of the collar for holding my improved collar pad in position. The upper central portion of the part 11 of the pad is covered by a leather strip 16 or the like, which is curved downwardly at its edges and sewed or otherwise properly secured to the edges of the leather strip 13.
The portion 16 is adapted to take the wear of the buckle or other fastening means for connecting the upper ends of the collar.
A pad of this kind has the advantage of a smooth, firm surface conforming to the neck of the horse for supporting the collar and properly spreading the draft over a considerable area. The smooth leather will not pinch or stick to the neck. The absorbent material 14; takes the moisture from the leather 13, which moisture will then evaporate into the air from the material 14. It is necessary, however, to protect the upper central portion ofthe absorbent material from the action of the buckle, and also to support the upper end of the collar to prevent the upper end of the collar from wearing down into the soft absorbent material. By using the leather piece 16 the collar is properly held in position.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a collar pad adapted to rest on a draft animals neck beneath the upper portions of the collar and to conform to the shape of the animals neck, comprising a strip of rm, solid but somewhat iieXible material, a pad member tted above said first described strip of material adapted to absorb moisture from said first strip and to give it 0E to the air, anda second strip of comparatively heavy solid material secured at its edges to said first strip and covering the upper central portion only of said pad member and adapted to receive the wear of the means for fastening the upper ends of the collar together.
2. In a device of the class described, a collar pad adapted to rest on a draft animals neck beneath the upper portions of the collar and to conform to the shape of the animals neck, comprising a strip of firm, solid but somewhat ieXible material, a pad member fitted above said first described strip 0f material adapted to absorb moisture from said first strip and to give it off to the air, a second strip of comparatively heavy solid material secured at its edges to said first strip and covering the upper central portion only of said pad member and adaptmember beyond the ends of the second strip for securing the collar pad to a collar.
