SKATE-STRAP.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Applicationvled January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,897.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it lmown that I, HENRY JAMES COLLIS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skate straps, and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which will afford maximum comfort to the wearer, which will be exceedinglysimple and inexpensive in construction, and which will furthermore possessV advantages in point of effectiveness, convenience and general efficiency. l
My invention has special relation to skate vstraps which provide a cushion pad lextending across the instep to take up orcompensate for and relie've thefpressure of the strap and secured in operative position. l
In the drawings Y Figure l is a top or plan view of my improved skate strap device.
Fig 2 is an edgeview thereof in its operative position.
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view on the line Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse sectionalview on the line g/-y, Fig. 1. p
Fig. 5 is a top or plan view illustrating a modified construction. y
Fig. 6 is a, detail transverse sectional view Aon the line .Q -z, Fig.. 5.V Y Y Corresponding partsin all the gures are denoted by the lsame reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, l designates thepad body member, which constitutes the main portion `or body-ofthe device and is l'of elongated shape affording suiiicient length to extend over'and across the instep where the strap passes across the same 'and of Vsuficient width to afford .a cushion which will take up or compensate for and relieve the pressure 'of thegskate strap when itis se.- A
cured across' the instep. 'The pad bodyfmem,
ber may be of any suitable contour iii-its elongated extent and is i'iexible or pliable,
affording a soft body member conforming to the instep. The body member l is constituted in its entirety by strips of leather or other suitable pliable material and a pad surface' carried thereby. In general construction said pliable body comprises a main sheet, 2,
terminaljends ofl said su corresponding to the longitudinal and trans-l verse `extent of the body member and carrying' at its under surface a pad, 3, which is preferably constituted bya sheet of soft wool corresponding in extent to the vsurface dimensions of the main sheet 2, and at the outer or top surface of thev'main sheet is carried a supplementary sheet, 4, which forms a tubular body construction through which the strap passes. The pad'B :maybe secured to the main sheet2 in any suitable manner,'forinstance, adhesively, rand the soft wool may be Vdirectly carried by the under surface of the' main sheet or carried by a pliable base sheet', 5, 'which is secured to supplementaryv pliable top sheet 4frprefer- `7O Y the under surface of the' main sheet. The Y ably extends continuously and longitudii nally of the base sheet 2 so that a continuous tubular passage, as yat 6, extendsllongitudinally of thejpad body member between saidsupplementary sheet and main sheet,
and the supplementary sheet is` secured `to the main sheet in its tubular relation thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by stitching.
elements ofthe pliable pad body .memb er, the main' v sheet' land the supplementary top sheet and the pad, are secured together byV a single smelling ext-ending at and throligh' the longitudinal edges'of the three elements,"V
as at 7,' thus leaving theends ofthe tubular In the preferred construction, the threek construction produced by theimain" sheet Y and the supplementary top .isleetfropen at the y ppleinentary top sheet,'as at 8.
The pad body memberfis carried by a se- Y curingstrap,v 9,' which consists lof ya pliable strip of textile material,r or leather having);
suitable fasteningfnieans, 4as at 10,5athits`re- Spectlve Vends.

practice, the pad. body member rests across the instep from side togside and exi tendsover the areafof the instepY vertically'.
to an extent corresponding to thewidth of the pad, and. the securing strap or strip` 9,
which projects at opposite ends of the continuous tubular construction by which it is carried in connection with the pad body member, is passed around under the-foot beneath the skate and is secured in tight ened position by the fastening means at its terminal ends.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated'a modified construction in whichv the pad body member 1 is provided with an additional top strip, 12, likewise of flexible material, extending across the supplementary top sheet 4 preferably at the central portion thereof. This additional top strip is relatively narrow in its longitudinal extent and is secured at its side edges in connection with the body member, preferably by the same single stitching 7 by which the other three elements of the body member `are secured together. This additional top strip element aords a supplementary tubular construction constituting a passage, as at 14, in the longitudinal plane of the body member and between the top strip 12 and the top sheet 4:, through which the strap 9 may be passed in its connection with the pad body member, and which will especially serve to retain the free end of the strap after the latter is secured in fastened operative position, as shown in Fig. 6. Y
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The pad body member is soft and pliable in all its elements `and extends as a soft cushion over'the area of the instep across which the securing strap passes. The pliable; pad body member thus conforms to the curvature of the instep both transversely and vertically and serves to effectively protect the instep against the pressure of the securing strap, the conditions being such thatthe pliable conforming pad body member underlies the longitudinal extension of the strap at all points where the latter is active in exerting a pressure against the instep. The retention of the securing strap longitudinally, by the continuous tubular construction, in its connection with the pad body member effectively servesto preclude any slipping or disarrangement of the pliable pad device and is also operative to prevent any tendency ofthe strap to vary its secured position. -The device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, and by reason of the structural characteristics of the pad body member as herein described it may be economically constructed of small pieces or waste strips of pliable material.
Having thusV described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. An improved cushion skate strap havl ing a pliable body member adapted to extend across and conform to the instep and consisting of a main body strip carrying at its under surface a soft and pliable pad cushion, a top body strip conforming to said mainrstrip and extending longitudinally over the surface thereof, said main and top body strips being secured together only at their longitudinal side edges leaving disconnected end edges and said strips thus conjointly forming a body member which is tubular throughout its longitudinal extent and open at both its ends, and a securing strap having its body length passingV longitudinally through said tubular body member and inclosed thereby beneath said longitudinal top strip and thus retained between and in bearing contact with said main and top body strips throughout the longitudinal extent of the tubular body member.
2. An improved skate strap device, comprising a pad body member pliable in its entirety and adapted to extend across the instep and conform to the curvature thereof, said pliable body member consisting of a main sheet carrying at its under surface a soft and pliable pad forming aA cushion and at its outer or topsunface a supplementary sheet conforming to the under main sheet and forming a tubular body construction extending longitudinally of the body member and an additional top strip or sheet extending across the supplementary to-p sheet and relatively narrow in its longitudinal extent and forming a supplementary tubular construction between said top strip and supplementary sheet, and a pliable securing strap carrying said pad body member and .passing continuously through the tubularbody between the under main sheet and the supplementary top sheet which covers the same and adapted to also pass through the supplementary tubular construction formed by said additional top strip.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed lthe foregoing specication.
f HENRY JAMES coLLis.
