EDWARD PHILLIPS, OF MOUNT FOREST, ONTARIO, AssIGNOR' OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES LEWIS SMITH AND JOSEPH DIXON SMITH, BOTH OF VARNA,
CANADA.
' CABIN ET-Fl LE.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,057, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed February 23, 1889. Serial No. 300,942. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD PHILLIPS, me-
' chanic, of the town of Mount Forest, in the county of Wellington, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and Improved Oabinet-File,of which the following is a speciication. I
The object of the invention is to design an improved cabinet-file in which documents, and literary, musical, and other papers may be classified and contained; and it consists, essentially, first, in arranging within a cabinet a series OF'spriITg-ngei's fixed to the inside of panels hinged to the front of the cabinet, the spring-fingers being arranged to hold such papers or documents which may be placed between them, and, secondly, in providing a series of drawers for thesaid cab inet, each drawer being provided with a hinged board designed to form an`adjustable cover for holding in place the documents within the drawer, the wholel being otherwise constructed substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained.
The drawing represents a perspective View of my improved cabinet.
In the drawing, A represents the cabinet, which may be made any desired design or size.
The cabinet shown in the drawing is designed for the use of a student of general literature, and it is intendedto enable the student to classify under their proper headings all the papers which he may receive, and so arrange them that the subjects may be easily followed from month to month.
The panels B are hinged to the cabinet AQ and are supported, when open, by the chains C. On the inside of each of these panels B, I arrange a series of spring-fingers D, so that papers arranged between each pair of fingers will be held in position by the said spring-fingers when' the panels are closed. As arranged in the cabinet illustrated in the drawing, the lower panel is designed to con-l tain papers received during a single week.
. The spring-fingers D are so arranged and numbered that the papers on different subjects may be classified. For instance, fingers I, 2, 3, and 4 may be designed to contain papers on philosophy Other fingers, properly numbered, may be set apart for holdhinged board F, which is intended and is de-A signed to hold in position the papers placed in the drawer. On each side of the drawer a strip of felt or other pliable material is placed, against which felt strips the ends of the board F t. By-drawing upon the handle H the board F folds up and may be lifted out of the drawer, leaving the papers exposed. IVhen it is desired to clamp. the said papers in position, the hinged board F is slipped into the drawer and the handle H pressed upon so as to straighten the hinged board, thus forcing its ends against the felt strips,- which will thus hold the board in thedesired position.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A le -cabinet A, having one or more panels B hinged to its front, each panel having fixed to its inside projecting lingers D, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
2. In a file-oabinet,a drawer E, in combination, with a hinged board F, provided with a handle H and designed to butt against the felt strips G, iixed on the inside of the drawer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A file-cabinet A, having one Ior more panels B hinged to its front, each panel having iixed to its inside projecting spring-nngers D, and one or more drawers E, fitted into the said cabinet and provided with a hinged board F to form a paper-clamp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Toronto, February 4:, 1889.
EDWARD PHILLIPS.
