UNrrnI)v STATE-s* @PA/TENT OFFICE.
FRANK I.. onosnv, on FARMER- oIrY, ILLINOIS.
HAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,028, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed July 23, 1889.
` To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK Il. CROSBY, of Farmer City, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and vuse it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hames; and it consists in a hanne provided with a slot or opening through it with the endwise moving and sliding tug, which is provided with a spring-catch for looking the tug in position, as willbe more fully described hereinafter.
The object ofv my invention is to so construct the hame-and the tug that the tug can be adjusted vertically upon the ham e, according to the height of the draft desired, and then locked rigidly in position.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a hame which embodies my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are edge views of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the tug.
A represents the hame through which the slot or opening B is made. This slot will be made of a length proportioned to the distance that the tug is to be adjusted, and just wide enough to allow the tug. to be moved back and forth therein. Applied to the outer edge of the hame is the metallic plate C, which also has a slot or opening made through it corresponding to the opening in the tug, and in one edge of the slot are made a number of recesses D, which are placed at equal distances apart, and in which the spring locking devices catch for the purpose of holding the tug in any desired potition. Applied to the inner edge of the hame,wl 1en it is made of Wood, is the metallic block or casting G, which is also provided with an opening through it corresponding to the slotB through the hame, and in opposite edges of which are formed the recesses I, in which the shoulders J on the inner end of the tug L catch. This tug is shaped 'as shown in Fig. 4, and to which the springserial no. 318,447. (No model.)
catch or locking device O is secured. In the side of the tug just under the spring-catch is made a sufficient recess or opening to allow the catch a suitable amount of play for the purpose of allowing the outer free end ofthe catch to be forced inward when it isdesired to loosen the tug for the purpose of adjusting it from one position to another. The front end of the tug is made sufficiently thick so that it cannot be drawn through the sloteither in the metallic block or in the hame, and upon opposite sides of this end are formed the shoulders J, which catch in the notches or recesses formed in the metallic block to receive them at the same time that the spring-snap catches in the recesses in the metallic plate. Vhen the tug is to be changed from one position to another, the outer end of the spring-catchis depressed, so as to free it from the recess in which it is locked, and then the tug is forced endwise through the slot in the hame until the shoulders J are freed from the notches or recesses, and then the tug is moved either up or down in the slot, as ,may be desired. After the tug has been moved into position pressure is applied to its front end and then it is forced backward through the slot until the spring-catch snaps into a recess in the plate C, when the tug will again be locked in position. ment of the tug at its front end, and the spring-snap prevents any at its rear end, and hence the tug is held rigidly in the position into which it may be adjusted.
By means of the construction here shown and described the tug can be adj usted upon the hame so as to accommodate the draft to any desired height.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. 'Ihe combination, with a hame provided with a slot B, which extends entirely through it, a slotted metallic plate C, which is attached to the outer edge of the hame and provided with notches D, and a slotted metallic plate or casting G, secured to the inner edge of the hame and provided with the notches or recesses I, of the vertically-movable tug, which extends through the slot and is provided with The shoulders J prevent any move-` the shoulders J at its inner end, and the and provided with shoulders at one end, and ro spring-catch O, substantially as shown. zu spring-snap, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the haine provided In testimony whereof Iziilix my signature in with a sot, a metallic plate applied to the presence of two Witnesses. edge of the haine and-provided with recesses l FRANK L. CROSBY' for the spr1ng-s1mp to catch in, si metallic block applied to the inner edge of the haine, XVitnesses: y and also provided with recesses, with the tug XVESLEY CURTIS, which is adjustable beek and forth in the slot LAWRENCE SCHNEIDER.
